On October 4, Daniel R. Helwig, Sr. passed away peacefully at home.
Daniel was born on September 2, 1939, in York, Pennsylvania, to his parents Daniel R. Helwig and Edith B. (Wagman) Helwig. He attended William Penn Senior High School before serving four years in the U.S. Army at Fort Dix, New Jersey. He was married at Christ Lutheran Church, where he remained a member, for 62 years to his loving wife Patricia. After a long career as a skilled machinist, he retired from Osram Sylvania. Over the years Daniel was a tropical fish enthusiast, a gardener and an orchid cultivator, an avid deer hunter and fisherman who enjoyed spending time outdoors with friends and family in upstate Pennsylvania, and a lifelong New York Yankees and Pittsburgh Steelers fan. He was a member of the Starview Sportsmen's Association in Mount Wolf. After his retirement, he enjoyed traveling, spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, playing cards with good friends, dining with his sister-in-law Lois Reynold and his sister Gini and brother-in-law Don, and tending his gardens. Daniel shares these words with his friends and loved ones, "Love one another, remember the good times, and look to God for all things."
Daniel is survived by his wife Patricia A. (Gotwalt) Helwig; his sons Daniel R. Helwig, Jr. (Tracy Helwig) of Hershey, Pennsylvania, Theodore G. Helwig (Laura Helwig) of Warrington, Pennsylvania, and Timothy W. Helwig (Magdelyn Helwig) of Greenville, South Carolina; and his siblings Virginia R. (Helwig) Stambaugh (Donald Stambaugh) of York, Pennsylvania, and Ronald J. Helwig (Layne Helwig) of Pine Knoll Shores, North Carolina.
He also leaves behind five grandchildren: Derek Helwig, Alyx Pavone, Zachary Helwig, Dean Helwig, and Jacob Helwig. And he leaves behind five great-grandchildren: Griffin Helwig, Jhett Helwig, Charlotte Pavone, Oliver Helwig, and Wyatt Pavone.
Funeral services will not be held. Donations may be made to Christ Lutheran Church, 29 S. George St., York, PA 17401.
