Daniel Carl Hilber age 78, passed away peacefully surrounded by love and with his daughter holding his hand at the House of the Dove in Marshfield. He was born on December 17, 1945, in Marshfield, the son of Leo and Elaine (Johnson) Hilber. Dan or Danny as his family calls him, grew up in Colby, WI, graduating from Colby High School in 1963. Dan served his country in the US Army during Vietnam from 1963-1966 he served in the E Co. 27th Maintenance Bn 1st Calvary Division. He was honorably discharged on July 31, 1969. Dan received his Army Transportation School Certified Tandem-Rotor Helicopter repair in Fort Eustice, Virginia in 1964, his certification for T55 gas turbine service and maintenance in Fort Benning, GA in 1966, his US Army transportation School Multi Engine Tandem Rotor Helicopter repair in 1965, His Boeing Technical Service School 80 hours instruction of CH 57A helicopters in 1965. Dan also worked doing factory work in the gaming industry as a plant manager and director of operations. This work had him travelling to Germany, Sweeden and Texas to set up factories. Dan retired in Plover where he was an operator for 10 years working at Golden County Foods for Mark Pulchinski who said his abilities were second to none so he called him out of retirement a few times to consult. Dan was a hard working- humble man who lived his life quietly. He loved visiting the family cabin on the Long Lake Chain in Phillips Wisconsin where he fished and went for pontoon rides. He enjoyed reading a good book and watching Gunsmoke and Clint Eastwood movies. He also enjoyed golf, fishing, and hunting in his earlier years. Dan's humor was present until even in his last days. We enjoyed his stories of playing softball with Al Capone's brother in Mercer, and showing us photos from seeing Ann Margaret and Bob Hope while in the service. His smile was infectious and his predictable way of answering his daughter's - I love you Dad, with a "I love you too Babe", will always be remembered.
Dan is survived by his daughter Angela (Mark) Pulchinski; grandsons, Luke (Kayla) Saeger and Jaeden (Brianna) Saeger; great granddaughter, Everleigh Saeger; and his sister, Jean Loughhead. He was preceded in death his parents, his son Scott Hilber; his brothers, Rick, Jeff, and Mike; and by his nephew Corey.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 4, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at Herman-Taylor Funeral Home with visitation from 9:00 a.m. until time of services at the funeral home. burial will follow in Central Wisconsin Veterans Cemetery in King, Wisconsin with Military honors conducted.
The family would like to thank Donna Hilber for the care, and friendship she gave to Dan. Also, to the amazing staff of House of the Dove in Marshfield for all the exceptional care they gave Dan, from the staff to the top notch facility where Dan was able to have one last drink of beer and feed his "Girls" the local deer that would come up to his patio at his room.
