Daniel Masse Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by St. John's Family Funeral Home & Crematory on Jan. 19, 2024.
Daniel Dodd Massé, 72, of St. Augustine, Florida, passed away peacefully in his home on January 11, 2024. Dan was born on September 6, 1951, in Columbus, Ohio to Reed and Virginia (Dodd) Massé. He graduated from Grandview Heights High School in Columbus, class of 1969, and studied at The Ohio State University. Dan moved to Deerfield Beach, Florida in 1976, where he tended bar and began to establish a career in the restaurant and bar business. He moved to St. Augustine in 1985 and began working as a salesman for Republic National Distributing Company. He retired as a Republic National representative in 2016 after a successful career that spanned more than three decades.
Through his work, Dan became well-known in the restaurant and hospitality community. His friends and associates throughout Northeast Florida are many. "Dan the Man" loved to talk and was happy to share stories with anyone who would listen. He was quick to crack a joke, and those who knew him will miss his dry, witty, and wise sense of humor. Dan loved listening to classic rock, jazz, and blues and playing both the guitar and the piano. He enjoyed golf, history, and a good debate about politics, and he was deeply attached to his family's beloved Cocker Spaniel, the late Queen Maggie Mae. He was also strongly rooted in his faith and enjoyed active participation in the Memorial Presbyterian Church community for many years. Most of all, he adored his daughters and viewed them as his greatest accomplishments, along with his beloved grandchildren, in whom he delighted. Dan was a devoted father, grandfather, brother, and friend, and his friends and family will remember him with love.
Dan is survived by his daughter Sarah Massé, daughter Anna (Alex) Martin, grandson Javier Martin, granddaughter Lina Martin, former spouse Betty Facine Massé, sister Debbie (Bill) O'Brien, brother Drew (Gail) Massé, sister Mary (Larry) Melfi, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, his brother Christopher, and his brother Stephen. A memorial service will be held at Memorial Presbyterian Church in St. Augustine on Thursday, February 1 at 2:00 p.m.. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to St. Francis Housing Crisis Center and Port in the Storm to honor Dan's long-standing support of his local community. www.stfrancisshelter.org

As a manager of a local restaurant for many many years, it was one of the pleasures of my job to work with Dan. He was a man of great wit and just so kind. One of the many things I'd missed about working in the restaurant was my dealings with my favorite purveyors. I just learned of his death today and it made me so sad to hear. Rest in peace Dan.

Simply put, Music is a powerful universal language that can bring all people together. Dan understood this. Dan loved music. Dan also loved Frank Zappa.
Frank Zappa once said, "Without music to decorate it, time is just a bunch of boring production deadlines or dates by which bills must be paid."
Dan and I had many conversations about music. Music bonded us together.
I´ll miss that.
