Daniel Meloan Obituary

Daniel "Dan" Joseph Meloan

Cedar Rapids

Daniel "Dan" Joseph Meloan passed away suddenly and peacefully surrounded by his loving family on March 5, 2026, at Mercy Hospital, the same place where he was born on May 22, 1945. According to his wishes, there will be a private funeral Mass at All Saints Church with burial following at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. There will be a celebration of life at a later date.

Dan attended St. Matthew's grade school and graduated from Regis High School in 1963. He graduated from Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa with a degree in Business in 1967.

He married his high school sweetheart Betsy (Lee) on September 23, 1967. After graduation they started their 58-year life adventure with his first job in the finance department at the GE Jet Engine Plant in Cincinnati, Ohio.

After several years they moved back to Cedar Rapids to work for Dale Lee Distributing where he worked for 20-plus years, eventually becoming Vice President. In later years Dan enjoyed a very successful career at Skogman Realty, a job that suited him perfectly. With his ready smile and warm welcoming personality, ("Dan Meloan, the man who shook hands better than anyone we knew") was a perfect fit with his vibrant personality and stylish attire.

A 55-year member of All Saints Church, his faith guided him throughout his life and sustained him during difficult times. He volunteered and was involved in many activities at All Saints Church and Regis High School. He enjoyed singing in the church choir and at home could "belt out" the best renditions of Danny Boy, and songs from Elvis Presley and Roy Orbison.

Dan loved his family fiercely. He was a devoted husband, father and proud "Papa." Betsy and Dan were true soulmates. They loved to fish, hunt, play golf, and travel together.

As a father, Dan never missed a moment. His sons, Matt and Danny, were involved in many sports. He enjoyed coaching many of their basketball teams, even taking a team to the AAU Nationals. Later in life, becoming "Papa" brought him great joy. He treasured time with his three grandsons and watching them grow into fine young men.

Dan was also a loyal and faithful friend, with a warm smile, an Irish twinkle in his eyes and a joke at the ready, which was a gift for always making people feel welcome. He enjoyed gathering with his high school friends monthly and reminiscing. He was a member of the Regis High School basketball team who won the Iowa State Basketball Championship in 1962.

Faith, Family, and Friends were the pillars of Dan's life, and his legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew him and loved him.

Dan is survived by his beloved wife Betsy, his sons Matt and Danny Jr. (Katie) and grandsons Jacob (Matt), Caleb, and Andrew (Danny Jr.); brother Jim McPartland (Kathy); sister Sue Hutchins; and many brothers- and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.

Dan was preceded in death by his parents Patricia (Goslin) McPartland; Cliff Meloan and James McPartland; twin daughters Molly and Elizabeth; brother Kip Meloan.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to NAMI, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Tunnels To Towers, and All Saints Church.
