With heavy hearts, We announce the passing of Daniel James Melvin Sr. 89, passed away peacefully with his loving wife by his side on November 27, 2025.
Born and raised in Lewiston, Daniel graduated from Lewiston High School before continuing his education at the University of Maine in Orono. He went on to serve his country with honor in the United States Army as a Fire Control Operator in the Nike Missile Program. His military service took him to Texas and Germany where he played a vital role during a pivotal time in American defense history.
Following his military service, Daniel dedicated over three decades to public service starting his career with the Lewiston Police Department and finishing with the Maine State Department of Public Safety, Bureau of Liquor Enforcement. He retired as a Sergeant after 32 years of committed work. Never one to remain idle, Daniel returned to school after retirement to earn his Commercial Driver's License (CDL). This new chapter gave him the opportunity to become a tour bus driver that allowed him to pursue his love for travel. He ended his career serving others as a driver for United Ambulance.
Daniel was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather whose life centered around family. He is survived by his high school sweetheart, his beloved wife, of 69 years, Elizabeth Louise Taylor; his children: Daniel Jr. and his wife Yuki ; Todd and his wife Carla ; Melissa Pinette and her husband Paul; and Timothy and his wife Amy. He was a proud grandfather to Daniel III and his wife Raquel, Forrest, Faith, Ethan and his longtime girlfriend Emily Rogers, Jamie, Kiana, Taylor, and Hayley; and great-grandfather to Emelia, Evelyn, Wilder, Lucy, and Chloe.
He was predeceased by his parents, James Albert Melvin and Matilda Hart Melvin; and sisters Leona McLain and Nancy Tessier.
Daniel had an unwavering passion for sports-especially as a loyal fan of the New England Patriots and Boston Celtics. But more than watching games, he found joy in being actively involved in his children's lives. Whether coaching youth teams or volunteering as a football referee or baseball umpire, he was always present on the sidelines. His enthusiasm extended into the next generation as he proudly supported his grandchildren's activities- Bumpa as his grandchildren and great grand children called him will always be their number one fan.
Known for his witty sense of humor and steadfast dedication to those he loved, Daniel leaves behind a legacy of service, laughter, and unwavering support.
A private ceremony will be held at a later date.
