Daniel Dennis Murphy, 88 of Mt. Airy, MD passed away on Saturday, January 31, 2026, in his home, surrounded by his loving family.
The beloved husband of Cecilia Murphy for 66 years. They married in 1959 in Brogliano, Vicenza Italy.
Dan was born July 8, 1937, in Minneapolis, MN, the son of the late Thomas J. Murphy and the late Jane Murphy (nee Geldert).
After more than 26 years of service, Dan retired from the United States Army Criminal Investigation Division as a Chief Warrant Officer 04 in 1981. He went on to work for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission for 18 years as a Special Agent. Dan investigated hundreds of cases throughout his law enforcement career and went on to lead multiple investigative offices.
His time in the Army and at NRC took him all over the world, including Korea, Vietnam, Germany, and Italy. Dan and Cece moved more than 13 times before finally settling down in Mt. Airy, MD.
Dan was an avid athlete, coach and overall competitor. Throughout his life he played football, basketball, baseball, racquetball, golfer, pool, cards and even a family, friendly game of croquet. The only thing he loved more than winning was his family. In his younger years, Dan and the family once climbed 7 mountains in 7 days in Austria.
Surviving in addition to his wife are children Daniela and her husband Bill; Betty and her husband Phil. Dan was the grandfather of Will and his wife Jen; Elena and her husband Jake, and great-grandfather of Kylie & Maddie. He will be sorely missed by all.
Inurnment will be at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery.
