FORT WORTH -- Daniel Nelson, 53, went to be with his Lord, Monday, Sept. 22, 2014. Graveside service: 10 a.m. Friday in Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery, 2000 Mountain Creek Parkway, Dallas (Grand Prairie) 75211, with honors, The Rev. Jesus Escamilla officiating. Those attending should gather at the cemetery parking lot no later than 9:30 a.m. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Greenwood. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Texas Disabled Veterans Association, P.O. Box 4023, Bergheim, Texas 78004. All monetary gifts are tax deductible. Daniel was born July 1, 1961, in Grand Forks, N.D., to Daniel Alva Nelson and Faith Renee Jenson Nelson. He was baptized at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, East Grand Forks, Minn., and attended elementary schools there as well as Saginaw, Mich., and Hudson, Wis. Lettering in sports while given the football team title, "Left-footed Kicking Specialist," Dan graduated from Fergus Falls, Minn., High School in 1979 and North Dakota State School of Science, Wahpeton, N.D. in 1981. During his 20 year US Army career, he served as Instructor/Writer, Jumpmaster and Platoon Sergeant at Fort Lewis, Wash., Fort Hood, Texas, Fort Irwin, Calif., & Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md., and was deployed worldwide in support of Special Forces mission. Since his military career honorable discharge, Dan served as a federal employee at the Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base, Fort Worth, Texas. Loving to spend time with his Jack Russell dog, Zeena, Dan also enjoyed preparing food on his grill/smoker, fishing, skiing, bowling, golfing, motorcycling and serving as Chaplain to his Harley-Davidson friends while earning the title, "Skid Mark." Survivors: Wife and best friend, Tammy Burger, Fort Worth; sons, Derek Nelson and Jared Nelson, Mount Angel, Ore.; mother, Rev. Faith Jenson, Fort Worth; sisters, Alix (Evans) Nelson-Royal, Fort Worth, Erin Nelson (Ben Sear), Grandview, Sonja Nelson, Crowley, and Kirsten (Russ) Lukach, Buffalo, Minn.; brother, Eric Nelson, St. Louis Park, Minn.; niece, Keyla Buzbee, Crowley; nephews, Jerry Buzbee and James Buzbee, Stephenville. Dan will be dearly missed by his family and many friends. Daniel Adam, our brother in the faith, we entrust you to God who created you. May you return to the One who formed us out of the dust of the earth. Surrounded by the angels and triumphant saints, may Christ come to meet you as you go forth from this life. Christ the Lord of glory, who was crucified for you, bring you freedom and peace. Christ the High Priest, who has forgiven all your sins, keep you among his people. Christ the Son of God, who died for you, show you the glories of his eternal kingdom. Christ, the Good Shepherd, enfold you with his tender care. May you see your Redeemer face to face and enjoy the sight of God forever.
