Barbara Blackwell Nelson

Barbara Elizabeth "Betty" Blackwell Nelson passed away on Friday, March 6, 2026, at the age of ninety-six. She was born on December 1, 1929, in New Orleans, Louisiana, to Alvin and Jeanette Blackwell. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Willie "Bill" Nelson, Jr.; and her sister, Jeanne B. Green. Betty is survived by her four children: Michael R. Nelson, Karen N. Hill (Ronald), Karla N. Forrest (Marvin), and Willie Nelson III; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. Betty was a devoted wife, mother, and matriarch whose life was marked by deep faith, service, and love for her family. She built a respected career in media, communications, advertising, and public relations and remained active in church and community service throughout her life. In 2025, she received a proclamation from the City of New Orleans in recognition of her decades of advocacy and for sharing the spirit of New Orleans. Relatives and friends are invited to attend her Funeral Service on Friday, March 20, 2026, at Bethany United Methodist Church, 4533 Mendez St, New Orleans, LA 70126. Viewing will begin at 9:00 a.m. and the service will begin at 10:00 a.m. Pastor Eugene Boger, officiating. Interment will follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery.
