Daniel Joseph Nowakowski Sr., born July 18, 1961, in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, and a resident of Harper Woods, passed away peacefully on September 5, 2025, at the age of 64.
A man of deep faith, service, and devotion, Daniel dedicated his life to family, community, and the Church. From a young age, he pursued service through the Boy Scouts of America, ultimately earning the rank of Eagle Scout in 1979 - a distinction that shaped his character and guided his lifelong commitment to leadership and helping others.
Following in the footsteps of his father, Richard, Daniel joined the Knights of Columbus, beginning as a Squire and continuing faithfully for more than four decades. He achieved the 3rd Degree for 46 years and the 4th Degree with the Honor Guard and Color Corps for 45 years. Deeply passionate about his role as a Brother Knight, Daniel lived out the values of charity, unity, fraternity, and patriotism with genuine devotion. Whether standing in full regalia with the Honor Guard or quietly serving behind the scenes, he gave his heart to the order and its mission, inspiring all who served alongside him.
Alongside his service, Daniel built a successful and varied career. While working at Motorola in California, he attended college and earned an Associate's Degree in Communication, furthering his expertise in electronics and technology. He spent many years with Motorola installing cameras and communications systems before moving into the growing fields of cellular and satellite television. Later, he and his wife proudly opened Universal Wireless Solutions, and he went on to partner with his daughter Crystal at Hi-Def Solutions. In his most recent career, Daniel served as a manager at DnA Drug and Alcohol Testing Centers, where he found purpose in helping clients stay the course and change their lives for the better. His professional journey reflected the same values he lived personally with dedication, innovation, and care for others.
Beyond his work and service, Daniel found joy in many passions. He was an avid boater and proudly served as Commodore of Boattown USA in Harrison Township, where he coordinated and participated in the Annual Festival of Lights Boat Parades. He also had a love for cars, especially his 1988 Fiero, which he and his wife showcased at car shows, earning numerous plaques and trophies in many categories. Daniel enjoyed friendly competition as well, spending time playing and competing in darts and bowling leagues.
At home, Daniel found great joy in the simple and meaningful moments of life. He treasured time with his grandchildren and great-grandchild, filling their lives with love, laughter, and stories. His beloved dogs Carmella, Halle, and Mysti were constant companions and part of the family he cherished so deeply. Daniel had an open-door policy with family and friends, always ready to welcome others into his home, often with a meal from his smoker or BBQ. He took pride in maintaining his pool and carefully landscaping his yard, often seen riding his tractor to mow the lawn and extending that generosity by helping neighbors with theirs. In 2024, his efforts were honored when his home received the Beautification Award from the City of Harper Woods.
Daniel loved hosting gatherings, where he would share a story or two, and he delighted in holiday traditions. His home shone brightest at Halloween and Christmas, decorated with countless lights and displays that brought joy to neighbors and family alike. These celebrations were just another reflection of his warmth, hospitality, and love for bringing people together.
Daniel is survived by his beloved wife, Susan, with whom he shared 23 years of marriage since December 29, 2001; his daughters Crystal (Bryson) Horton and Jennifer (Joshua) Frank; his son Daniel Nowakowski Jr.; and his brother David (Kara) Nowakowski. He was the proud grandfather of DeMontray and DeVon Horton, Harper Horton, Lenox and Knox Frank, and Oliver Nowakowski; and the adoring great-grandfather of Malani Horton. Daniel will also be fondly remembered by many cousins from around the globe, along with countless friends and Brother Knights who were touched by his generosity and fellowship.
Visitation will be held at St. Hubert Catholic Church in Harrison Township on Friday, October 3, 2025, beginning with In-State at 10:00 am. A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 am, with luncheon to follow in the church activities hall. Daniel was cremated, and his family will honor his wishes with this celebration of life. The Knights of Columbus Honor Guard will stand in tribute to his lifelong service.
Though he has passed from our sight, Daniel's example will live on in his family, in his brotherhood with the Knights of Columbus, and in the communities he so faithfully served both on land and water.
