Daniel James "Dano" O'Connell, 72, passed away on February 27, 2025, at LakeWood Health Center in Baudette, Minnesota.
Born on December 2, 1952, to William and Eva O'Connell, in Minnesota, Daniel lived a life rooted in hard work, family, and the simple joys of nature. He proudly served in the Vietnam War, where he faced many challenges, including battling Guillain-Barré syndrome, but that never slowed him down. After his service, and a year of healing at Fort Simmons Hospital in Colorado, he worked with his brother as a forklift driver. He decided to move up north where he worked at Spina Sawmill and was a partner with Stan Spina cutting trees in the woods. Later he built a career as a trailer mechanic at Andy's Garage, using his skills to provide for his loved ones.
Dan met the love of his life, Nyla (Buegler) O'Connell, in a moment that seemed straight out of a storybook-when he gave her a ride home on his snowmobile. On August 8, 1992, Daniel married Nyla, and together they built a home south of Williams. In 1999 they brought home 2 sets of twins: Aaron, Alex, Amy, and Amber to add to their loving home. Dano's role as a father and grandfather brought him immense joy. He cherished time spent with his grandchildren, Christopher, Elijah, and Nevaeh-who brought light into his life.
A true homebody at heart, he found joy in the quiet moments of life: tending to his garden, working on projects in his woodworking shop, and hiking the trails on his back forty acres. His love for the outdoors was matched only by his devotion to his family. He adored spending time with his grandchildren, passing down wisdom and sharing laughter along the way.
Dan found great satisfaction in tending to his large garden. He had an undeniable green thumb and took pride in growing food for his family. When he wasn't outside working the soil, he could often be found watching old westerns or football games. Before adopting children with Nyla, Dan spent time coaching summer league softball-a role that reflected both his leadership and generosity of spirit. Daniel had a deep appreciation for animals and never hesitated to take in a stray cat or dog that needed a home. His faith was an important part of his life as well; he was a devoted Catholic who carried his beliefs with quiet strength.
He is survived by his beloved wife Nyla; sons Alex and Aaron(Taylor) O'Connell; daughters Amy and Amber (Tim) Roberts; grandchildren Christopher, Elijah, and Nevaeh Roberts; sister-in-law Pat; as well as sister-in-laws, a brother-in-law, many generations of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents William and Eva; sisters Mary, Jo; and brother Mike and sister-in-law Elmerna.
Daniel's legacy is one of love, resilience, and an appreciation for life's simple pleasures. His memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew him.
