Maxine "Max" Harris Garner O'Connell, 72, passed away peacefully on January 27, 2026, in her hometown of Ogden, Utah. A lifelong resident of Ogden, Maxine was born there on December 27, 1953, to Alma and Zella Harris. A proud graduate of Ben Lomond High School in the Class of 1972, Maxine went on to serve her country with honor in the United States Navy Reserves. Her dedication extended into civilian service as well, where she worked at Hill Air Force Base until her retirement.

Maxine was known for her vibrant personality—funny, quirky, and full of light. She never met a stranger and had an extraordinary gift for making everyone feel welcome. Her kindness radiated through every aspect of her life, from her deep devotion to family and friends to her unwavering compassion for animals in need. She had a special place in her heart for lost and homeless cats and gave generously of her time and love to care for them.

She found joy in simple pleasures—sharing meals with loved ones at her favorite local restaurants or preparing “nice meals” at home. Cooking was one of Maxine’s great joys, and she often shared her culinary creations with neighbors and friends as a gesture of love and community.

Maxine was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and lived a life rooted in generosity, and faith.

She is lovingly remembered by her sisters Christine Casey (Gilbert) of California and Janet Eller (Philip) of Vermont; closest friends Jackie Archer of Florida and Steve Garner of Ogden; as well as numerous nieces, cousins, extended family members, and many dear friends whose lives were touched by her warmth.

She was preceded in death by her parents Alma and Zella Harris; brothers Merrill (her twin), George Harris, Wayne Harris, and Dean Harris.

In honor of Maxine’s lifelong compassion for animals, donations may be made to “Whiskers – Rescuing Those Truly in Need” (whiskersutah.org) or “A New Beginning Animal Rescue” (anbarrescue.org).

May Maxine’s memory bring comfort to all who knew her and continue to inspire acts of kindness in the world she so dearly loved.
