Daniel Opdyke Paul

Daniel Opdyke Paul passed away peacefully on October 5, 2025, in
Madera, California, at the age of 98. Born in Oakland, California, to Natalie and Maurice Paul on October 3, 1927, Dan graduated from Oakland High School in 1945 and joined the United States Navy Reserve. In 1947, he moved to Hamilton City with his wife, Vivian, and later attended Chico State for two years.
Dan dedicated much of his career to public service. He served as a Lieutenant with the Glenn County Sheriff's Office from 1950 to 1964. Between 1964 and 1968, he and Vivian owned and operated several businesses in Hamilton City, including the B&B Bar/Restaurant, a beauty salon, and a clothing store. In 1969, he worked as a census taker before returning to the Glenn County Sheriff's Office in 1970 as a Probation Officer, where he remained until his retirement in 1992. Even after retiring, Dan continued to work part-time for several years.
A passionate outdoorsman and accomplished marksman, Dan won numerous shooting competitions, with trophies proudly displayed in his home. He enjoyed traveling in his trailer during retirement and was deeply committed to his community. He served as Mayor of Hamilton City for 14 years, was a past president and longtime member of the Hamilton City Lions Club, and held membership in the Chico Elks Lodge #423 for over 60 years. Dan also served on the School Board for 31 years and actively supported the Hamilton City Friends of Athletics, contributing to events such as corned beef and cabbage feeds. He was a devoted member of the Evangelical Free Church.
Dan met his second wife, Jean, in 1976, and they were married in 1983 on the island of Kauai. They shared a close and loving bond. Jean was active in the Hamilton City Woman's Club and Friends of Athletics, and was known for her famous chocolate chip cookies.
Dan was preceded in death by his parents, Maurice and Natalie; his wife, Jean; his son, Claude; and his sister, Dorothy. He is survived by his daughters, Diana Stewart and Debbie Tiede; his son, Greg Paul (Janet); grandchildren Chris, Kelli, Jason, Brett, and Brandon; and 13 great-grandchildren. He will be remembered as a kind, gentle, and devoted father, grandfather, and friend.
