DANIEL SHIPE Obituary

Beloved Tioga County musician Daniel ("Danny") Shipe died peacefully on August 22, 2025, at the Gatehouse Family Hospice in Williamsport, surrounded by loving family and friends, following an 18-month courageous struggle with cancer.
Daniel Brosius Shipe was born in Philadelphia on October 13, 1955, the son of Robert Amos and Virginia (Burns) Shipe. He grew up in Springfield (Delaware County) and graduated from Springfield High School in 1973. His love of the great outdoors first developed during outings with his family in Central Pennsylvania, New England, and Canada. He graduated from Mansfield State College with a degree in Regional Planning and Development and Geography. In 1993 he married Pamela Walker of Mansfield on Ocracoke Island, North Carolina.
Danny drove for UPS for 35 years, bt his passions were gardening, outdoor sports, and above all, music.
An avid cross-country and downhill skier, Danny served on Denton Hill Ski Patrol for some 25 years. For the past 13 years, he and Pam would spend much of the winter in Utah to take advantage of the unique "no friends on a powder day" snow.
Danny's other outdoor passions included kayaking, mountain biking, and fly fishing as well as ocean fishing off Ocracoke with his good friend Ed Calvitti. His garden at their home on Rattler Mountain was his pride and joy, always overflowing with magnificent flowers and delicious, nourishing vegetables.
But it was as a musician that Danny was best-known in Tioga County and beyond. A skilled guitarist, banjo player, and song writer with a rich baritone voice, he was a central figure in four bluegrass, progressive bluegrass, and folk bands: North Fork Alliance, Burnt Toast, Hickory Project, and Drowsy Maggie. In the last nine years, he sang in a folk duet with Molly Cary. With Burnt Toast and especially with Hickory Project, Danny performed to widespread acclaim in festivals across the U.S., in Ireland, Europe, and Australia, even playing a concert at the Kennedy Center.
In addition to concert touring, Danny and Pam enjoyed traveling across North America, frequently heading to the lower Saint Lawrence for sea kayaking and whale watching. They took several driving trips through Central and Western Europe.
Danny is survived by his wife; his brother, Tim Shipe and sister-in law, Liz Moon of Iowa City; sister-in-law, Amy Walker Murdough (and Mark) of Pine City, N.Y.; nieces, Heather Walker Peters, Holly Walker, and Alexandra Murdough Georgia; and great-nieces, Emma, Catie, and Mollie Peters and Olivia Louise Georgia. He is also remembered fondly by countless devoted friends. He was predeceased by his parents.
A memorial celebration will be held on October 5 from 2 to 7 p.m. at the Deane Center, 104 Main St, Wellsboro. Memorial contributions may be made to Second Chance Animal Sanctuary, 725 Gee Rd., Tioga, PA 16946 and The Humble Bumble Project, Inc., 152 Tioga St., Wellsboro, PA 16901. Buckheit Funeral Chapel and Crematory, Inc., 637 S. Main St., Mansfield is assisting the family. www.buckheitfcandcrematory.com

I had 2 real friends in high school - Danny and Dave. We did everything together. I lost track of him over the years but recently reconnected. He was the same lovable guy I knew from high school. And he found his soulmate in Pam. It´s a great loss to everyone who knew him. I´ll miss you Dan!

I was fortunate to meet u when moving up to PA. Followed your music ever since. We got to know you and Pam as friends over the last few years and can only say what wonderful people you are. You will be forever missed and I will picture you every time I hear Joni. Lots of great musicians up there; you will be welcomed with open arms!
It´s time to say farewell ; the song has ended but the wonderful memories sustain our souls.
