Father Daniel J. Skvir, 79 of Pennington died peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family. Born in Martins Ferry, OH, he grew up in Jersey City, NJ until he matriculated at Princeton University, Class of 1966. Throughout his life, he remained a true Tigers fan, enjoying decades of football and basketball season tickets. After Princeton, he attended both Union Theological Seminary and St. Vladimir's Seminary before returning to Princeton. He was a teacher and administrator at Princeton Day School for 41 years. Known as Fr. Dan and the spiritual father of the school, he wore a variety of hats over years (Director of Admissions; teacher of Russian, History and Religion; College Counseling and much more). With his wife, Tassie, he took students to the Soviet Union for years, introducing numerous students (and adults) to Russian culture firsthand. In 1989 Princeton Day School was selected to be one of the first schools to participate in a US-USSR Exchange of high school students. In his heart, he was always a PDS Panther, supporting his students and his own daughters in the classroom, sports fields and life's endeavors. While a full-time educator, he was always deeply involved in the Orthodox Church of America. In 1989 he was ordained to the priesthood after many years as a deacon and choir director. Shortly thereafter, he began his service as priest chaplain at Princeton University for 35 year, leading its Orthodox Chapel of the Transfiguration.
Son of the late Rev. John and Barbara Skvir of Ss. Peter and Paul's of Jersey City, NJ, he was married in 1967 to Tamara Turkevich, daughter of Very Rev. Dr. John Turkevich and Prof. Ludmilla Turkevich. They taught together at PDS for 40 plus years and formed a true partnership in many ways. He is the father to Nika Skvir-Maliakal (Sanjiv) of Stamford, CT and Kyra Frankel (Joshua) of Brooklyn; brother to Natalea Skvir of Edmonds, WA and John Skvir of Westwood, MA; devoted grandfather to Sadie and Wylie Frankel of Brooklyn, NY and Katherine and Madeline Maliakal of Stamford, Connecticut.
A music enthusiast, Father Daniel enjoyed choir directing and was an avid arranger of music for choral singing. He was the Recipient of St. Romanos Award for his work as director, arranger, collector of liturgical music. He was a translator, along with his wife, of Rachmaninoff's unfinished and only opera that was orchestrated by Igor Buketoff (Monna Vanna).
Father Daniel was responsible for the world premier of Maximilion Steinberg's Passion Week, which had never been performed, 90 years after it had been written Father Daniel will always be remembered as a March Madness aficionado that loved to follow the NCAA basketball brackets. He was a life-long Mets fan and the biggest fan of his daughters' various sports teams, never missing a game! Most of all, he was known for his calm, wise presence that impacted the lives of hundreds of students, parishioners, friends and family.
The Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 27, 2025 from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm at St. Vladimir Orthodox Church 812 Grand Street, Trenton. The Funeral Service will begin at 7:00 pm.
The Panahida Service will be celebrated 9:30 am on Friday, March 28, 2025 at St. Vladimir Orthodox Church 812 Grand Street, Trenton.
Burial will follow in the St. Vladimir Russian Orthodox Cemetery 316 Cassville Road, Jackson, NJ.

Father Dan was my priest at Princeton during my undergrad years there in the '90s.
Growing up in a rough-around-the-edges and fairly "ethnic" Eastern Orthodox community in PA, at the little chapel in Murray-Dodge was the first time I had ever participated in Divine Liturgy in English. My first confession was with Fr Dan as well, probably at age 18 or 19?
Fairly certain that I would not still be a practicing Orthodox Christian today - and my life would be so different - were it not for Fr Dan's influence, guidance, and encouragement.
I miss the simplicity of those days. Fr. Dan and Mat. Tassie set an example more than they may realize.

On behalf of the staff and former stufents of Moscow School #84, who were participants of the Students Exchange Program in the 1990-s, I wish to say that Father Dan was doing his best to establish true, friendly and sincere relations between our school and PDS. He was a wonderful teacher and the best possible guide, advisor and friend for all of us!
We will always remember him, his wisdom, his kindness, his smile and his unforgettable sence of humour!
We love you, Father Dan!

I met Daniel Skvir around 1969 or 1970 as my Russian teacher at PDS. I believe this was Dan Skvir´s first role in his long professional relationship with the recently constituted PDS. He took over as Russian teacher in the middle of the academic year upon the sudden and unexpected death of his predecessor. I´m certain all this must have been a challenge. With a humble, firm, methodical and patient demeanor, he quickly assessed his students´ needs - there was clearly no teacher available to brief him - he did what was needed brilliantly and in short order won over all of PDS´s Russian students. He also won over just about everyone. Over the ensuing half century, he grew with PDS, wore many hats, led PDS as it maintained its excellence, filling the role of Director of Admissions when needed as well as serving as a musical and spiritual presence. Over the years when we ran into one another at PDS and wherever, Dan never forgot me and greeted me with enthusiasm and always asked how I was doing. He will be missed. Condolences to Tassie Skvir and the Skvir family.

Dear Tass, Nika, and Kyra,

I am deeply saddened to learn of Dan´s passing and your loss. As a close friend and dorm mate of Dan and Chuck Peischl in my junior and senior years, I valued our friendship and admired his drive to follow in his father´ footsteps and become a Russian Orthodox Priest. He became much more than that. I was particularly impressed by his homily at the memorial for our classmates in the Princeton Chapel at our 50th or 55th Class Reunion. It was so mature, thoughtful, and moving. It touched me deeply. He was truly blessed, and we were blessed to have known him.

Tassie: Sally and I will always remember the countless basketball games Dan and you shared with us at Princeton as well as many shared meals. We have been very fortunate to have you nearby us now for decades, both in Princeton and, more recently, in Pennington.

Our arms are folded around all your family in this time of grief for Dan. You and your daughters were so blessed to have the opportunity to be together with Dan as he passed. It is a special coincidence that Nika and our Liz were able to spend some tome together in Maui earlier this month and Sally and I feel even closer to Dan as we stopped by your house just a few days before Dan's hospitalization. He remained so clear-headed.

Our love, Mark and Sally

Dear Tassie, I´ve just now heard of Dan´s death. I am at a loss for words to express my shock and sorrow, but I wanted to reach out to you say how much you and Dan have meant to me over the many years. I have felt a part of your lives, and blessed magnificently with the beauty and warmth of your wedding, one of the finest moments and memories of my life.
I send condolence to you and all your family, with loving regards.
