Daniel Russell Sterling-"Sarge", 80, of Maple Fork passed away Sunday, August 17, 2025. Born May 13, 1945 in Grant Town, WV. He was the son of the late Wayne and Ernestine Moomaw. Dan loved working around the house, whether it was yard work, or building something out of wood. He loved spending time with his family, whether it was immediate or his racing family. He loved flagging for 30+ years at Beckley Motorsports Park. In addition to his parents, he was proceeded in death by his loving wife of 50 years, Esther Ruth Sterling. Those left to celebrate his life are his 2 daughters; Anita Gail Sterling Krysztofiak and husband Rob of MD; Angela Louise Bostic and husband Mica of Maple Fork; Grandson Matthew Cameron Mitchem and fiancé Brandi Leann Mitchem and granddaughter Mattie Leann Mitchem of Maple Fork; along with "adopted kids" Amy Bowyer Deal of Maple Fork; Brandon Young and Alyssa Hatcher and son Hudson of Maple Fork. Dan spent 20+ years serving in the Airforce and Army National Guard. He was a Vietnam Veteran and was ranked SGT 1st Class in Troop C 150th Squadron. He retired from the VA Medical Center in Beckley, WV with over 20 years of employment A celebration of Dan's life will be Wednesday, August 27th, 2025 at the Raleigh County Convention Center with Pastor Roger Pauley officiating. Dan's wishes were to be cremated and his ashes spread with his wife Ruth. There will not be a viewing just a memorial service. Friends may visit from 6 PM to 8PM
