Darlene K. Mortland, 78, of Cambridge, Minnesota, peacefully passed away surrounded by her family at Cambridge Medical Center on the morning of May 30, 2024.
Darlene was born on December 10, 1945, to Lee and Veona Hildebrandt in Brainerd, MN. Her siblings were Russell, Virginia, Bonnie, and Deborah. In 1969, Darlene married Gerald Mortland, and they later made Cambridge their home to raise their family.
Darlene graduated from Brainerd High School and embarked on a successful career. She began at the Brainerd State Hospital, which led her to join the Cambridge State Hospital. There, she was a dedicated and hard worker, retiring after 30+ years of work.
Darlene, a devoted Christian, spent many hours volunteering at the church and was a cherished member of the Christian Women group. She also selflessly volunteered at Shalom, finding joy in ironing clothes. Her passion for gardening was evident, as she proudly won a blue ribbon at the Cambridge Fair for her exquisite orchid. However, her most treasured achievements were her children and grandchildren, whom she dedicated countless hours. Darlene's love for her family was evident; she often spoke of them with great pride and affection.
Darlene was diagnosed with Alzheimer's eight years ago. Despite her disease, Darlene never forgot her family and how much she adored them.
Darlene was preceded in death by her parents, brother Russ Hildebrandt, sister-in-law Juanita Hildebrandt, and nephew David Paul.
Darlene is survived by her children Jacqueline (Scot) Kirk, Lisa (Kevin) Topolnicki, Amy (Larry) Shrider, and Jeffrey (Kim) Mortland; grandchildren Ian and Isabelle Kirk, Brennan and Bryson Shrider, and Luke Mortland; former husband Gerald Mortland; sisters Virginia (Joe) Paul, Bonnie Hildebrandt, and Deborah Glotzbach. and nieces and nephews.
