DARRELL BACON Obituary

DARRELL BACON Darrell Glen Bacon was born on July 8, 1954, to Elvin and Vivian (Dickerson) Bacon. The Bacon family rejoiced that a baby boy had been born to carry on the Bacon name! Darrell attended Roosevelt Elementary School, Park School, McPherson Junior High and graduated with the Class of 1972 from McPherson Senior High School. Following graduation, Darrell attended Wichita Automotive School to become a mechanic. He began his career at Marshall-Turner Chrysler-Plymouth from 1973-1977. In 1977, Darrell began working at Midwest Industries, first in the Polishing Department, then running a mill, followed by being a supervisor of the Milling Department. He retired in 2020, completing 43 years of service. During the summer before Darrell's senior year of high school, he worked at Kansas Broasted Chicken as a cook. There, he met a waitress named Stephanie (they met in the walk-in freezer!) who would become the love of his life. They were married on July 6, 1974, and celebrated 50 years of marriage on July 6, 2024. Darrell and Stephanie were blessed with two sons: Mark and Adam. Darrell was so proud of his sons, and particularly was the most proud of the young men they had become. Darrell loved his family dearly, especially his grandchildren, loved his many friends, loved his Thursday Morning Men's Bible Study, loved the annual jeep trips with his jeeping buddies, loved his granddog Mya and his grandcats Finley and Shadow, loved restoring a 1937 Plymouth truck with his dad and Adam, loved ice cream, loved J.D.'s hamburgers and burnt onion rings, and he loved collecting Dr. Pepper memorabilia for years to decorate the family room in the basement. Darrell was very talented with woodworking, building several beautiful pieces of furniture as well as special crown molding for most of the rooms in their home. In February, 2022, Darrell was diagnosed with cancer. He fought this disease off and on until the cancer claimed his life on November 24, 2024. During Darrell's cancer battle, Darrell rededicated his life to the Lord and was baptized on May 26, 2024. He had such a sense of peace following his decision to discontinue chemotherapy and looked forward to going to heaven. Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Stephanie; son Mark Bacon and wife, Jackie along with their children Cade, Ellie and Owen of Lincoln, Nebraska; son Adam Bacon of McPherson, Kansas; sister Jean Stevenson and her husband, J.R. of Newton, Kansas; sister Diane Parrish and her husband, Wayne of McPherson, Kansas; Aunt and Uncle Elsie and John Sheriff of North Newton, Kansas; sisters-in-law Kris Swanson and her husband, Dale of McPherson, Kansas and Pam Mitchell of Norman, Oklahoma along with numerous nieces and nephews, extended family members and a host of friends. Darrell was preceded in death by his father Elvin Bacon and his wife, Donna; his mother Vivian Childers; and parents-in-law Floyd Oborg and Diana Oborg. Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM on Friday, December 6, 2024, at the McPherson Free Methodist Church. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:30 AM, Saturday, December 7, 2024, at the McPherson Free Methodist Church. Those attending the service should feel free to dress casual. Darrell would say that no ties are allowed. He thought life should be lived in t-shirts and jeans so feel free to honor him this way. Memorial donations can be made to the McPherson Free Methodist Church or Free Methodist Church-USA to support missionaries Jordan and Audrey Kaufmann in care of Stockham Family Funeral Home, 205 North Chestnut, McPherson, KS 67460. Offering our deepest condolences during this difficult time.

Please accept my deepest condolences. If memory serves, as a high school student Darrell also worked at Rusty's Hamburgers on Kansas Ave across from Lakeside Park, where he was an ornery but very nice "mentor" to a young fellow working his first job off the farm and in the city. His enthusiasm for Led Zeppelin's first album was infectious and his conviction that "Communication Breakdown" was the GOAT was unshakable. He was very kind and shared a vast knowledge of life freely.
