Mortensen Funeral Homes - Bellaire ChapelDarrell (Bud) Dewey was born Oct 6, 1924 in Ellsworth, and died Dec 25, 2026 in Bellaire. His dear friend Janet helped him meet his goal of staying home until just a few days before death.
He was preceded in death by his mother Hettie, his father Forrest, sister Aggie, wife Fern and his son Don.
He is survived by his daughter Beth, Daughter-in-law Darcy, three grandchildren: Kelli (Becca), Tim (Jean), Camille Stewart (David Mantelman) and a sister Millie Drogt. Playing with his grandchildren was a favorite activity which came naturally as he was always a kid at heart. Whether it was jumping on a trampoline into his 80's or beating his grandkids at Wii bowling he was always a fun grandpa.
Bud’s memories of those 101 years included life as a farmer keeping the food supplies coming for three years during WWII , playing basketball in the Community Hall, going with another couple to Goshen Indiana for a double marriage ceremony, working three years on the Great Lakes on the iron ore boat EH Block, league bowling and pitching softball.
He hunted deer, dipped smelt, caught pike, muskie, trout, bass, perch and whatever else you could get out of Northern Michigan waters year round. His large vegetable garden kept him busy until he chose to give it up in his 90s.
Bud enjoyed his work and the friends he made at Lamina as a tool and die maker. He was passionate about the Bellaire/Central Lake area and loved to share that passion with his kids and grandkids, showing them all the places where he had adventures as a child. Although he loved his hometown, his wife loved to travel and as a result he visited all 48 continental United States. So many adventures and memories. Too many for this short obituary.
Visitation will be on Saturday, January 10, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. An informal memorial will be held at Bellaire Lanes and Games on Sunday, January 11, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Please leave a message for Beth Dewey at 231-533-8051 if you plan to attend this memorial.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Munson Healthcare Hospice, or Antrim County Commission on Aging.
