Darrell Eugene Ketelsen peacefully passed as he was surrounded by his family on August 15, 2025, in Ankeny, Iowa. His 85 years of standing tall in both stature and character established a lasting legacy for all those who knew of his quiet strength, steady wisdom, and contagious smile.
Visitation will be held Thursday, August 21, 2025, from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. at Lutheran Church of Hope (520 NW 36th St.) in Ankeny with funeral service to follow at 11a.m. A graveside prayer will occur at Ankeny Memorial Gardens after the service. Luncheon to follow the graveside service at the church.
Born November 17, 1939, in Clinton, Iowa, to Anson and Arla (Paulsen). Darrell had an older brother, Don, and two younger sisters, Diane and Doris. He graduated from Lost Nation High School in 1959 and served his country in the Army National Guard Reserves for four years.
Darrell was married to the love of his life and high school sweetheart, Ida Mae VonEssen, on May 24, 1959. The two welcomed their girls, Lori Sue and Kimberly Kay. The love Darrell had for his three ladies is undeniable.
Every challenge, even those as difficult as a 7-10 split, was met head-on throughout Darrell's career. He held various roles from mechanic to owner at bowling lanes in Cedar Rapids and Belle Plaine.
Darrell is survived by his wife, Ida Mae; daughter, Lori (Larry) Beal; grandchildren, Amanda (Nick) Luick, Bryan (Jenn) Beal, Ashley (Joe) Miller, and Chad (Ara) Fabor; great-grandchildren, Tyson and Taylor, Kade, Owen (Kandice), Trinity (Wesley), Dalton, and Clay; great-great-granddaughter on the way, Hadley; sister, Doris (Clyde) Scovel; sisters-in-law, Joan Dutton, Sandy Cronbaugh, Teri (Tom) St. John, and Ellen Ketelsen; family friend, Gary Fabor; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Darrell was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Don; sister, Diane Carter; daughter, Kim; and brothers-in-law, Jack and Bob.
Though he has left this earth, his long life lives on in the generations he helped shape. May each who knew him be carried by his unwavering patience and consistent presence of comfort and calm. Remember fondly the love, memories, and joy to cherish forever.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the family as they determine a memorial to honor Darrell's life.
