He was born on September 4, 1952, to Ida Mae (Burleson) and Louis Charles Matej in Edinburg, Texas
He married Carolyn Grace Turner on November 15, 1974, in Edinburg, Texas.
He was a United States Marine veteran.
He is survived by two daughters, Lynda Gleason and husband, Jeremy of Delta, Colorado and Amanda Schmidt and husband, Justin of Sabinal; son, James Matej of Victoria; two sisters, Delores West and husband, Jack of Sabinal, and Barbara Webb of Plano; brother, George Matej and wife Kandy of Sheridan, Texas; grandchildren, Nicklaus Gleason, Kenneth Gleason, Hunter Schmidt, Brazos Schmidt, Mason Matej, and Abigail Matej.
He is preceded in death by his parents; wife; sister, Patsy Campbell; and brother, Leon Matej.
Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.
A private family service will be held at a later date.
