Darrell Sanders Obituary

Published by Legacy on Dec. 10, 2025.
Darrell Gray Sanders was born on the 27th day of May, 1938. He saw his Lord Jesus face-to-face on December 5, 2025. He was born in Morehead City, North Carolina and died at Kirby Pines Lifecare Community in Memphis, Tennessee. He was predeceased by his parents Ruby Taylor and George Sanders. J.C. Simmons was his stepfather and also predeceased him. A memorial service is scheduled at First Evangelical Church, 735 Ridgelake Blvd., Memphis, Tenn 38120 on January 6, 2025 @ 11:00 a.m.

After High School, Darrell went into the Air Force. From basic training, he was assigned to serve a year in the Philippines. His sweetheart, Vollie and he married and she stayed home and finished high school. Two years after moving to Massachusetts, daughter Sherrie was born and Darrell finished his time in the Air Force.

Back in his hometown, Darrell was doing well but something was missing. He and Vollie had just had their second daughter, Dedee but he continued to have that feeling. He had some friends over and they shared the Gospel and God's purpose for his life. He knew that was what he was missing and he came to know Jesus Christ. That's where the adventures began. The first adventure was doing studies with teenagers in the family home. Soon, Darrell and Vollie were moving and doing ministry with enlisted men and women at bases in Florida from east to the Gulf. That was when he became officially involved with the Navigators.

Memphis was hungry for Jesus, on campus, in med schools, military bases, and churches. Many came to know Jesus and learned how to walk with Him. This is when he and Volllie had their 3rd child, Kiesa. 13 years there and then to California for 3 years, he learned more about the ministry.

On to the next adventure, Darrell and Vollie moved to Colorado Springs, home of the Navigators, and Darrell was offered many opportunities. Darrell, at this point, had served the Lord for 30 years, traveling, leading, teaching, training and serving others, giving his life away for people.

Darrell left a large family behind. Vollie, his sweetheart almost married 69 years. Sherrie, his oldest daughter, who lost her husband to cancer had 1 child, Cid Herlein and 2 grandchildren, Maddox and Ryann Herlein with his wife, Babe Herlein. Dedee Berry and her husband, Scot Berry had three children, Joshua, Brandon and Kelsey. Joshua and his wife, Adrienne had 4 children, Ethan, Ryan, Natalie and Lillian. Brandon Berry and his wife, Kacey had three children, Palmer, Baker, and June. Kelsey and her husband, Joel have three children, Allie Blake, Jake and Riley. Kiesa has three children, Bryanna, Avery and Haven and is married to Nick DeSimone.

"He was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit, and faith, and a great number of people were brought to the Lord". Acts 11:24
