Darrell Gene Walker, known by many names-Daddy, Grandpa, Gramps, Papa, and Pop-Pop, a skilled cattle rancher and beloved family patriarch, passed away peacefully on September 19, 2025, at the age of 79, at his home, surrounded by his loved ones. Born June 12, 1946, in Okfuskee to Travis Carl Walker and Wanda Lee (Thomas) Walker, Darrell was the oldest of five children and lived a life dedicated to the Lord, his family, and the cattle he so lovingly tended.
Darrell's deep knowledge of ranching was unmatched. From his first job as a grinder at Oklahoma Steel Castings in Tulsa, he later transitioned to ranching, becoming a true expert in the field. He had an extraordinary gift with cattle, often able to look at an animal and immediately know what was wrong and how to fix it. Whether it was caring for the land or tending to the needs of his herd, Darrell's dedication and skill were evident in everything he did. He worked harder than most men could ever dream of and never quit, even when he was sick and his body was failing him. He loved his ranching life with a passion and lived it every day with integrity and pride.
A man of great humor and even greater heart, Darrell was the cornerstone of his family. He was the kind of man who loved his family with everything he had. His infectious laughter and sharp wit made him the life of any gathering, and he was known for telling the best jokes. His family and friends will always remember his warmth, his willingness to lend a hand, and the deep love he had for those closest to him.
Darrell is survived by his wife of 60 years, Delores Onita (VanOrsdol) Walker. They were married on August 7, 1965, and together they shared four children. Their love for each other was unmatched. Darrell was so loving and kind to his wife, always showing her in small ways that most wouldn't think of. It was in these quiet acts of love that his devotion to her shone the brightest. His children also survive him: Marlene Long and husband Risky, Sherry Walker and husband David, Carl Walker, and Pamela Parish and husband Jim all of Okemah; and his cherished grandchildren: Kayla Lee and husband Heath, Austin Long, Addison Long, Kelbie Meier and husband Michael, Colton Parish, Lexi Parish, Austin Walker and wife Shelby, and Haydon Walker and wife Brooklynn. He is also survived by his great-grandchildren, who brought him much joy: Paislee Meier, Ryker Meier, Hayes Lee, Kashton Lee, and Clay Walker.
Darrell is further survived by his brothers, Gallen Walker and wife Carol of Okfuskee, and Roger Walker and wife Sharon of Okfuskee, and one sister, Rhonda Walker of Seminole, as well as a host of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Travis and Wanda (Thomas) Walker and one sister, Theresa Travelene Fish.
Darrell's legacy of hard work, love, and humor will live on through his family and the many who were touched by his life. His presence will be sorely missed, but his memory will continue to inspire all who knew him.
A service to celebrate Darrell's life will be held on Thursday, September 25, 2025, at 2:00 PM at the First Assembly of God Church in Okemah. Interment will follow at Okfuskee Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be his grandsons: Austin Long, Colton Parish, Austin Walker, Haydon Walker, Heath Lee, and Michael Meier. Honorary pallbearers include Gallen Walker, Roger Walker, Wayne Walker, Jim Hall, Sr., Don Bruce, Marty VanOrsdol, Paul VanOrsdol, and Glen Thompson.
