Darrell "Sid" Walters was born on May 13, 1939, in Nicut, to Bob and Maude L. (Flanagan) Walters. Darrell departed this life, in his home, in Sallisaw on Saturday, Aug. 2, 2025, surrounded by loved ones.
A 1958 graduate of Muldrow High School, Darrell continued and completed his education at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah where he majored in Education. Exemplifying his love for basketball, Darrell began his career as a coach at Moffett Public Schools. Throughout his years as a motivator for the youth of Eastern Oklahoma, Darrell succeeded in leading teams to numerous district and area recognition's. Some of Darrell's most proud moments were coaching teams for the Sallisaw Central Tigers, Roland Rangers and Blue Jacket Chieftains, where many players were transformed from kids to competitors. Following retirement, Darrell continued to be involved by cheering for the local, county teams. Like many Oklahomans, the formation of the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2008 ignited a revived and exciting pastime of watching NBA basketball that consumed lots of his time.
Darrell loved to spend time on Tenkiller or Kerr Lakes where he spent hours fishing and enjoying the scenery and weather.
Darrell was a follower of Christ and attended Missionary Baptist Church in Sallisaw until driving became difficult. Darrell loved his family and was known to go out of his way to offer a helping hand.
