Darrin “DJ” Demeatrius Dafney Jr. was a beloved soul whose presence left a lasting impact on all who had the privilege of knowing him. Born on January 26, 1995, in Des Moines, Iowa, Darrin's journey on this earth came to a peaceful close on July 6, 2024, in Iowa City, Iowa. A memorial visitation will be held on Friday, August 2, 2024, at Lutheran Church of Hope in West Des Moines from 11:00 A.M. - 1:00 P.M. Immediately following his visitation his celebration of life memorial service will begin at the Church at 1:00 P.M. with Reverend Alex Hanna officiating. A private family burial will take place at a later date.
In his professional life, Darrin worked diligently as an accountant, showcasing his dedication and skills in the financial arena. However, his true passions extended far beyond the confines of his career. A student athlete during high school and a talented basketball player, Darrin excelled both academically and athletically. He proudly graduated from Valley High School in 2013 before continuing his basketball journey at Simpson College. It was at Simpson College that he earned his bachelor's degree in accounting in 2017, a testament to his hard work and commitment to his education.
Those who knew Darrin understood that he was a man of few words and beneath his soft-spoken demeanor lay an undeniable energy that shone through in his infectious smile and laughter. His love for Kobe Bryant and the LA Lakers was evident to all, as was his passion for collecting Nike shoes and being an avid sports fan with an impressive ability to quote players and team stats effortlessly.
Outside of work and sports, Darrin found joy in the simple moments of life - from relaxing by the lake, spending time with friends to exploring new destinations while traveling. His deep love for music was reflected in his lifelong commitment and role as an Isiserettes Drill and Drum Team member and Lead drummer with the Drum Line. Darrin was member of Union Baptist Church in Des Moines.
Darrin's family meant everything to him, and he cherished every moment spent with them. In his final moments, he was surrounded by their love at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics. He leaves behind a legacy of love and fond memories that will forever be treasured by those closest to him.
Darrin is survived by his parents, Lonnie Dafney and Darrin (Reeshemah) Dafney Sr. siblings Christina (Airron) Roy, Dominique Dafney, and Raynah Foskey; nieces Audrey Roy and Chloe Roy; grandparents Pam Williams and Ozie Dafney; along with a host of other Singleton and Dafney relatives; as well as many close friends who will deeply miss his presence. Darrin was preceded in death by grandmother Elizabeth Martin-Butler, grandfather Alonzo Q. Williams, and uncle Bernard Dafney.
In this time of sorrow, may we find solace in the cherished memories we shared with Darrin and celebrate the beautiful life he lived. His spirit will continue to inspire us to live each day with kindness, laughter, and an unwavering love for those around us.
Rest in peace, Darrin Demeatrius Dafney Jr., your light will forever shine brightly in our hearts.
