Darryl Edward Joyner, 71, transitioned from this life Wednesday, January 21, 2026.
He was born May 28, 1954, in Asheville, to the late Evelyn Moss Joyner and John Clyde Smith.
Darryl was a God-fearing man with a spirit that filled every room he entered. Known as a true jokester, his laughter was unmistakable, jovial, contagious, and full of life. He carried joy naturally, yet beneath that humor lived a man of principle, strength, and no-nonsense integrity. When Darryl meant business, you knew it. But his heart was always gentle and rooted in love.
A meaningful life event for Darryl was marrying his high school sweetheart, a union that remained central to his heart throughout his life. He often shared that one of the most important lessons he wanted to pass on was to remain humble, no matter the circumstances. One of his favorite quotes reflected that wisdom: "Only when it's dark enough can you see the stars," by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Though he had no biological children of his own, Darryl helped raise many, offering guidance, protection, and care without hesitation. His love extended far beyond titles or bloodlines. He loved freely, without condition, and without keeping score. Darryl was married twice to the love of his life, Tina, because as he would say, no matter what, she would always be his wife until one of them passed. His love for Tina was deep, unwavering, and passionate. His final words reflected that devotion: "Thank you. I love you, Tina."
While families may experience differences, Darryl never held a grudge. Fault never mattered more to him than peace, and forgiveness came easily from his heart. He was loved by many, and he loved many in return, with sincerity, loyalty, and grace. Darryl enjoyed a variety of sports, with football and golf holding a special place in his heart. A devoted Philadelphia Eagles fan, he took pride in cheering on his team and enjoyed the camaraderie and joy that sports brought into his life.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by step-father, Willie McCoy Joyner, mother and father-in-law, William and Estelle
Jones.
Darryl is survived by his beloved wife, Tina Joyner; cousin loved as his sister, Jenny Moss; Rita Warren, sister-in-law; brother and sister-in-law Donald and Donna Jones; and a multitude of cousins, nieces, nephews; great nieces and great nephews; and devoted friends.
Darryl will be remembered for his laughter, his faith, his humility, his love of sports, and the many lives he touched simply by being himself.
"And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose." Romans 8:28 (KJV)
