Daryl Lynn Mathews, age 71 of Hiawassee, Georgia, passed away on Wednesday, December 13, 2023. Daryl was born on August 19, 1952, in Atlanta, Georgia to the late Mr. and Mrs. Roy and Mary Mathews. He was a member of the Sons of the American Legion, and the CMC Motorcycle Club spending many years riding with his cherished friends. Daryl graduated from Briarwood High School in East Point and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. He worked for American Airlines for 30 years before retiring to Hiawassee, Georgia. After retirement, he continued to fly his own plane privately for enjoyment. He was an avid aviation enthusiast as flying was his lifelong passion. He enjoyed motorcycle racing, NASCAR racing, aircraft racing, baseball, and boating. Daryl was easily described by friends as the most loving, caring human being; they knew. He was kind, generous and loving to all his family and friends. He was the true definition of a lifelong friendship, having many friends from his grammar and high school days with whom he kept in touch regularly. He will be deeply missed.
Daryl is preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Mary Mathews and twin brother, David Mathews. He leaves behind his loving wife, Dawn Liabastre Mathews; brother Tommy Mathews (Alicia); sister-in-law, Patti Mathews; nieces and nephews, Mary Mathews, Melissa Turner (Britain), Sarah Mundy (Stephen); great nieces and nephews, Brayden, Declan and Laken Turner, and Brighton and Ava Munday; as well as numerous cousins and friends.
A Celebration of Life Service for Daryl Mathews will be held on January 20, 2023, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at the Haisten Funeral Home in McDonough, GA, 1745 S. Zack Hinton Pkwy, McDonough, GA 30253. Interment will follow at Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church, 1933 Mt. Carmel Rd, Hampton, GA 30228.
