Daryl Lee Viland was born on October 10, 1950 to Carrol and Bettie (Priester) Viland in Pipestone, Minnesota. Daryl attended Pipestone Public Schools and was confirmed at First Lutheran Church in Pipestone. During high school, he was active in FFA and the recipient of various awards. After graduating in 1968, he furthered his education at the University of Minnesota in St. Paul, Minnesota and graduated with a double major in Animal Science and Ag Economics in December of 1971. After meeting his future wife on a blind date in college, Daryl was united in marriage to Marlys Anderson on October 7, 1972 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Benson, Minnesota.

Following his graduation, Daryl started farming in Pipestone raising hogs and Angus/Simmental cattle. In 1975, Daryl and Marlys were Farm Bureau members and served on the Minnesota State Young Farmer and Rancher committee. Daryl and Marlys purchased a farm in Appleton, Minnesota in 1976 and built a farrow to finish hog confinement operation. Throughout their 14 years in Appleton, Daryl worked closely with the University of Minnesota in assisting farm veterans during the farm crisis of the 1980's. With Marlys' help in creating lesson plans, Daryl taught classes to veterans that were farming. He was also a proud member and president of the Appleton Jaycees. The couple was blessed with 3 children, Kelly, Kristel and Ryan, while living in Appleton.

In 1988, they relocated to Pipestone and Daryl continued his love of farming by working at John Deere and eventually purchasing ownership of Viland Implement in 1990. The family enjoyed several John Deere sponsored trips. Daryl was a member of Christ The King Free Lutheran Church in Pipestone where he was involved as a trustee and chairman. One of Daryl's favorite things to do in Pipestone was attending events his children participated in. Whether it was band competitions or sporting events, his nights and weekends were full of entertainment. Amidst a series of local arson incidents, Viland Implement was burned down in 2006 and eventually Daryl sold the business in 2008. After retirement, he continued spending time in the tractor planting and harvesting for local farmers, even as recent as this fall, and traveling with friends.

He enjoyed his toys, collecting a wide array of motorcycles, cars, boats, and was meticulous about them. You could always find him tinkering in the machine shed with a lawn mower or tractor. What he loved even more than his toys were his grandchildren. He was their biggest fan and tried to attend as many of their events in person or watch online and never missed a chance to visit them.

Daryl was known as a hard worker, up early in the morning, and ended his day late at night. He was supportive, intelligent, and passionate about the things he loved. He was a great problem-solver and very detailed in everything he did. Daryl was very proud of his children and their desire to educate themselves to reach their highest potential. On Saturday, December 27, 2025, Daryl passed away at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota at the age of 75 years, 2 months and 17 days.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 53 years, Marlys Viland of Pipestone; children, Kelly (Kevin) DeGezelle of Mahtomedi, Minnesota, Kristel (Eric) Rogers of Cottage Grove, Minnesota and Ryan (Jessica Reinhart) Viland of Sioux Falls; siblings, Jean Maher of Sioux Falls, Dennis Viland of Jasper, Minnesota and Steve Viland of Pipestone; 6 grandchildren, Lawson DeGezelle, Cohen Rogers, Paisley DeGezelle, Leighton Rogers, Lilia DeGezelle and Trey Viland and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Carrol and Bettie Viland; grandparents, Raymond and Luella Priester, Clarence and Martha Viland and brother-in-law, Terry Maher.
