Alice Prattico Obituary

Prattico, Alice Marie

Rochester: On May 15, 2013, at age 68, peacefully in her sleep with her family by her side, after a long and brave battle with cancer. Alice was born and raised in Rochester, NY. She is survived by her loving and devoted husband, Jim, of 45 years; her children, Anthony, John, and Michael and Julie (Paska) Prattico; her grandchildren, James and Maria Prattico; her sister Salome (Lawrence Daly); sisters-in-law Frances (Prattico) Warden, Domenica (Prattico) DeFazio, and Carolyn (Furlong) Prattico; her cousins, nieces and nephews; and many supportive friends. Alice was predeceased by her parents, Edward and Helen (Walkowski) Szwajkos.

A graduate of Benjamin Franklin High School and Monroe Community College, Alice worked many years for the Diocese of Rochester at Blessed Sacrament Church, St. John the Evangelist, and St. Ambrose. She also stayed at home for many years to raise their three boys.

Alice was an avid gardener, knitter, and artist. She loved tending and sharing her vegetables and flowers, and was a certified Master Gardener. She was a prolific member of the Shawl Ministry at St. Ambrose, and was always knitting another item of warm clothing for her family. On many vacations and quiet moments, Alice could be found drawing or doing a crossword puzzle, taking photos of interesting flowers, or searching for unusual shells along the seashore, where she loved to walk.

The Prattico family would like to extend their gratitude to the very kind and supportive doctors, nurses, and staff at the Leo Center for Caring.

Friends may call on SUNDAY, May 19, from 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM at the funeral home, 1650 Empire Boulevard, Webster, NY. Funeral Mass on MONDAY, May 20, at St. Ambrose Catholic Church at 10:00 AM, with interment at Holy Sepulchre Catholic Cemetery. Alice was one of the sweetest, courageous and fun loving persons I knew. She was also a talented artist and gardener. I am so glad that my mom got our families together. I found that Alice and I had so much in common. The first time we went shopping together, we both headed to the sale rack. Alice would be so proud of her children, including her daughter in law's, and her grandchildren. I know she is taking care of all of them from above.

To the family of Mrs. Prattico, my name is Gene Gordon and I am a teacher at Fairport High School. I wanted to let you know that Every year for the past 15+ years, I have read your mother's essay which was published in the D&C in the 90's about her son. It is called"How the Seeds of Curiosity Did Bloom." The essay meant a lot to me when she wrote it and it has meant a lot to my students each year. I decided to look your mother up this year as i read it to my class. I was saddened to learn about your family's loss. I want you to know that Alice had an effect that she never knew about. Please accept my warmest thoughts about Alice. Her essay had an impact outside whatever she expected.

With respect,
Gene Gordon

Michael and John, I'm so sorry to hear about your loss. I was your sixth grade teacher at School 46 and recall so clearly how devoted Alice was to her family. I will always remember her as a model Mom. You were very lucky to have her.

Cousin Alice was a dear, sweet lady who was so good to our family. She had a wonderful way of making everyone feel welcome and at home. My Grandmother, Mom, and Uncles loved her very much. It was such a pleasure to get to know her, her husband, Jim and their boys. We will miss you Alice.

THe Szwajkos Family may be one of the smallest in number but we are the biggest in the love that we have for each other. Alice had the Szwajkos gene for loving others especially family, flowers which are the sign of life and those quiet moments of reflection. She could however, dance a great Polka.

My dearest cousin Alice is a person who I will always carry in my heart. She took her family to see my mom and their visits were truly appreciated. Knowing that Alice was checking up on my mom to insure that she was doing ok made all of our lives easier who live so far away. I looked forward to seeing her this year. When I visited her last year in the hospital she was still fighting very hard and will always be an inspiration to me. Her grandchildren came to visit and her face lit up and you could see how much she loved and cherished them. Alice I will miss laughing with you. Love you very much! Tom

I loved my cousin Alice. We didn't know each other as youngsters, but later in life we developed a relationship that was very special. We look alike, we act alike, have many of the same interests. We both feel a strong love of family. The first time we went shopping together, she headed for the sale rack in the store. That's the first thing I do!! She had a great sense of humor. Whenever I would come to Rochester, we would get together. Alice would always have us over for one of her very delicious dinners. She was so great to my Mom. Alice, I will miss you, but I'm happy that you are not suffering any more. Love ya, cousin. Kathy Szwajkos Marcus
