Spokane - Father David, former campus minister and alumni chaplain at Seattle University, died unexpectedly in Spokane, on September 5, 2025. He was 61 years old.

He was born in Rapid City, SD, on March 20, 1964, one of five boys born to Edmund Anderson and Marilyn Rae Gorman Anderson. After graduating from Gonzaga University in 1986 with a BA in psychology and religious studies, entered the Jesuit novitiate in Portland, OR, to begin studies for the priesthood. He earned an MA in philosophy from Gonzaga and taught religion and coached cross country at Gonzaga Prep, 1990-1993, before beginning theology studies at the Jesuit School of Theology, Berkeley, CA. He spent a year as parochial vicar at St. Joseph's Church, Seattle, before taking up pastoral work on Nelson Island in southwestern Alaska, where he served the Yup'ik villages of Toksook Bay, Tununak, and Nightmute from 1998 to 2006.

He returned to Washington in 2006 and served a year as pastoral minister at St. Leo's Church, Tacoma, before moving to Seattle University, where he worked as campus minister, director of Ignatian retreats, and from 2009 to 2024, as alumni chaplain. He was an avid supporter of the university sports programs and served as chaplain to various teams including men's basketball. He was also one of the chaplains for the Seattle Seahawks.

Dear Dave, I was blessed to be your sister-in-law for 25 years. I am grateful for all the time you shared with our family. I think of the many dinners at home, the shared holidays, conversations on the deck, and the way you loved the boys. In all my interactions with you all these years, I never once saw you angry, frustrated, not even irritated. You exuded calmness, gentleness and kindness. You were always one of the first up from the dinner table to help me with the dishes. That repeated simple act of thoughtfulness never escaped me. You left way too soon, Dave - it is hard to find solace when the grief is so raw. But you served our Lord faithfully for 28 years. And I know your reward is great and that our Savior lovingly welcomed you Home. I will miss you. Thank you for all that you were to all of us. Rest in eternal peace, dear Dave. With love, Meg

Dear Fr. David,

Your departure from among us was way too soon. Everything you did to touch souls for their salvation and God´s glory is written in bold letters in the Book of Life and on our hearts. We feel the emptiness of your absence and tremendous gratitude that you were a significant part of our lives. We will never forget. Be at peace now and one with Jesus Whom you loved and worshipped. The tenderness of His love for you outstrips ours and now enfolds you eternally.
Proudly a brother and friend in the Lord,
Fr. L. Michael Pope, S.J.
