David Backhaus Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Hafemeister Funeral Home and Cremation Service on Dec. 14, 2023.
David "Dave" John Backhaus, age 84, of Watertown, WI, passed away surrounded by his loving family.
Dave was born on May 1, 1939, in Hustisford, the son of Reinhold and Evelyn (Bramer) Backhaus. He graduated from Horicon High School in 1957 and proudly served in the National Guard. On September 2, 1961, Dave married the love of his life, Barbara Heim, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Mayville.
A true Lawnmaster, Dave took immense pride in his yard, creating a sanctuary where hummingbirds fluttered and cardinals flew. He loved all sports, always rooting for Wisconsin teams. Dave found solace in the thrills of short-track racing, especially at Jefferson and Slinger tracks. His passion for racing also took him to the heart-pounding excitement of the Brickyard 500 in Indy and races in Bristol, TN. Dave's devotion to his community was evident through his participation in the church choir and his work at Carnation/Silgan Corporation. He was a man who valued hard work and the simple pleasures of life, like the camaraderie among friends and neighbors, many of whom he cherished deeply.
Dave is survived by his devoted wife of 62 years, Barbara Backhaus, his son Mark (Heather) Backhaus, his daughter-in-law Kim Backhaus, his grandson Travis (special friend, Nichole), his granddaughter Jenna (Tanner) Stanossek. Dave is also survived by a cherished extended family, including beloved niece Kim Kayser and nephew Richard (Diane) Kayser, who brought immense joy and love to his life.
Dave was preceded in death by his son James David Backhaus, his infant granddaughter Christina Backhaus, and his parents.
A funeral service to celebrate Dave's life will be held on Friday, January 19, 2024, at Hafemeister Funeral Home at 11 a.m. with Rev. Young Tae Lee, officiating. Family and friends may gather at Hafemeister Funeral Home from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Entombment will follow at Glenview Memorial Gardens, with military honors conducted by American Legion Post 189. Memorials may be made to the family in remembrance of Dave.
