David Alan Bartels passed away at home on December 23, 2025, in Orlando, Florida. The son of Walter and Lilah (Nelson) Bartels, he was born on July 14, 1936, in northern Indiana where he grew up. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, May Forbes Bartels, 4 children—Mary Prince (and Patrick), John Bartels (and Tonya), Ruth Poglitsh (and Rudolph), and Rebecca Campbell (and Gregory), 1 brother—Charles Bartels, 13 grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by 1 son—Stephen Bartels, 2 sisters—Beverly Smith and Barbara Brewer, and 1 brother—William Bartels.

David committed his life to Jesus Christ as a young man, and his life has reflected that decision in his relationships with his family, his church, his neighbors, and other areas of life. He was a member of Friends Community Church in Orlando.

David received an AA as an electronics technician from Purdue University Extension Fort Wayne, IN. He chose this degree because he wanted to keep his hands in the work. For thirty years he worked in military defense contracts, first at Magnavox/North American Philips and then at Martin Marietta Aerospace where he progressed to a senior engineer responsible for test design. At various times, he also served as a TV service repairman, auto air conditioning mechanic, and enthusiastic repairman for old washers and dryers. He enjoyed finding the problem and fixing it, whether designing test equipment at work or in private life fixing everything from cars to roofs to toys to appliances.

His interests and hobbies included fixing things, gardening, participating in church-related activities, and finding treasures at garage sales. One highlight was his participation in a Church of God work camp, which built the Teepee Church at Wounded Knee, SD in 1967.

Children have always had a special place in Dave’s life. In fact, his gentle way with his nephew and niece were part of what drew May’s attention. He made room for nieces and nephews, his own kids, neighbor kids, foster kids, kids at church, and of course grandchildren. Some favorite memories of the kids are bike riding, playing ball, and impromptu trips to the park. The grandkids talk about garage sales, treasure hunting, and the candy dish.

David was a man of prayer and of the Bible. It impacted each stage of life. In later life, Alzheimer’s and cancer threw a curveball. Dave submitted each of these to the Lord. He walked through difficult years of diminishing abilities with grace and gratitude until He finally went home to be with his Savior and Lord Jesus.
