Funeral services for David Bartl, 79, of Portales will be held at 11:00 AM, Tues, Nov. 19, 2024 at Central Christian Church with Rev. Larry Mote officiating. Burial will follow in the Portales Cemetery. Visitation for Mr. Bartl will be on Mon., Nov. 18, from 8:00 AM to 8 PM. In lieu of flowers, if desired, please send donations to ASPCA, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and Shriners Children's Hospital.
David Frank Bartl was born May 16, 1945 in St. Paul Park, MN to the home of Adeline (Fisher) and John Bartl, and passed from this life very suddenly on the evening of Nov. 12, 2024 in Hereford, TX. Mr. Bartl graduated from Park High School in 1963. During his school years, he played hockey, football and baseball. Following graduation, he attended the University of Minnesota for a year before transferring to St. Thomas University in St. Paul where he completed his undergraduate degree as well as his Master's Degree in Education.
On Aug. 2, 1969 in St. Paul Park, MN he was married to Judith Zehnder. For the first several years of his career, he taught English as well as coached in Hastings, MN. In the mid 1970's, he accepted a position as an English Professor at New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell, NM and remained there for fourteen years. In 1989 he began teaching History and coaching basketball at Berrendo Middle School where he taught until 2000. In addition, he taught night classes at Eastern New Mexico University Roswell campus from 1990 to 1995. His last position in the public schools was in Hagerman, NM from 2001 until his retirement in 2007. He also was an adjunct English Professor for 4 years at ENMU Portales.
In 2007, he and his wife moved to Lubbock, and finally settled in Portales in 2016 to be close to their son and his family. He attended Trinity Episcopal church with his wife. Mr. Bartl was an avid reader, and throughout his lifetime he enjoyed watching sports of all kinds. In addition, he had a nice collection of stamps. Mr. Bartl loved their little Chiweenie, Annie, and enjoyed taking her for her two daily walks.
Mr. Bartl is survived by Judy, his wife of more than 55 years of Portales; a son and daughter-in-law, John and Noelle Bartl of Portales; two daughters and a son-in-law, Kerri Bartl of Denver, CO and Kim and Jerramie Vondall of Minneapolis, MN; two grandchildren, Samantha and Charley Bartl; two brothers, Jim Bartl (Kathleen) of Eau Claire, WI and Tom Bartl (Beverly) of Woodbury, MN; and a sister, Jan Van Steenkiste of Wadsworth, OH.

Mr. Bartl has a great place in our minds and hearts. He was our teacher at IHM grade school in St. Paul. He developed theater for us. I was the lead in "Our Town" and have so many great memories of him in our middle school experience. He will be missed.
