David Eugene Bitler, age 75, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, March 8, 2026. Born on June 13, 1950, in
San Diego, California, to the late Jack and Katherine "Kitty" (Donato) Bitler, David grew up a "military brat," developing a deep appreciation for the many states he called home throughout his life.
Following his graduation from El Capitan High School in
Lakeside, CA, in 1968, David followed the path of his upbringing and proudly joined the United States Marine Corps. He served from June 27, 1968, to August 31, 1972, achieving the rank of Lance Corporal. Leveraging his prior experience as a radio engineer, he served as a Ground Radio Repairman, completing specialized training in electronics, radio fundamentals, and cryptographic maintenance at the Communication-Electronics School in San Diego.
David's commitment to excellence continued through the Marine Corps Institute, where he mastered land navigation, explosives, and demolition. For his dedicated service, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Rifle Marksmanship Badge, and the Good Conduct Medal. The duty and discipline he learned in the Corps remained with him throughout his life.
On September 27, 2004, David married the love of his life, Judy Davis, in
Las Vegas, NV. Together, they shared over two decades of partnership and love. David worked as a skilled telecommunications technician, a career that took him across various states and allowed him to connect people and communities.
David truly lived life to the fullest through simple pleasures. He was happiest when he was fishing, chatting with friends and family, or sitting in the stands at the ball fields. He was a permanent fixture at baseball and softball games, where he could always be found cheering on the players while enjoying his favorite snacks.
David is survived by his beloved wife, Judy Davis; his sister, Marie (Harold) Hall; his brother, Jim (Sharon) Bitler; and his daughter, Deborah (Ellis "Art") Starling. He also leaves behind his stepson, Jackson (Robin) Davis; stepdaughter, Casey Nortman; ten grandchildren, Michael, James, Austin, Matthew, Cody, Lisa, Tobey, Lucas, Laynie, Lexi Felisha, Ellis Jr, and Tristan; and nine great-grandchildren, Brody, Wesley, Viktor, Serena, Chasen, Maddie, Elliot, Maverick and Tyler.
He was preceded in death by his father, Jack (1989); his mother, Katherine "Kitty" (2015); and his sisters, Shirley (1953), Becky (2000), and Kathy Houchin (2023).
David will be remembered for his easygoing nature, his devotion to his family, and his ability to find joy in a quiet afternoon by the water. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
A memorial service honoring David's life will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, March 20, 2026, at Slay Memorial Funeral Center, 400 US-377,
