Obituary published on Legacy.com by Clayton Kay Vaughan Funeral Home - Alvarado on Feb. 3, 2026.
David Condel Broyles passed away surrounded by the love of his family, leaving behind a legacy of independence, generosity, and quiet devotion to those he loved most.
David was the beloved husband of Karen Marie Long Broyles, with whom he shared 40 years of marriage, a bond that stood as the great love of his life. He was a proud father to Donna Herod and a devoted grandfather to Koby Herod and Kasey Herod Castillo, and a cherished grandfather-figure through family bonds that meant the world to him. He was especially fond of Kasey's husband, Carlos, who was embraced as family.
He was born to David Britton Broyles and Hazel Jeanette Franks Broyles, both of whom preceded him in death. David is survived by his sister, Dava Lynn Williams, and was preceded in death by his sister, Sharon Gayle Sanders.
David was a loving uncle to Donny Sanders, Lynn Williams and wife, Kerry; Rhonda Dippo and husband, Michael; Many deeply loved great-nieces and great-nephews who brought him joy and pride.
A graduate of Prairie Valley High School, David spent his working life as a Superintendent with Ed Bell Construction, where he was known for his strong work ethic and leadership. He later retired, carrying with him the respect of those who worked beside him.
Known affectionately as "Dat" by his grandchildren, David was a man who loved deeply and lived on his own terms. He loved the outdoors and found peace tending to his garden every spring and summer. He raised cows and took great joy in watching calves grow, finding simple satisfaction in the rhythms of rural life.
David also had a poetic soul and often described himself as "an outhouse poet with no direction." He loved writing, thinking, and reflecting-often quietly, always sincerely.
Those who knew him best knew a man with a strong presence and a fierce spirit, balanced by the softest heart. He never turned away someone who was down on their luck or in need of a helping hand. His compassion was practical, steady, and genuine.
David often said, "I never danced to anyone's fiddle but my own," a phrase that perfectly captured his independence and authenticity.
