David Bussan Obituary

Dr. David Nicholas Bussan

May 2, 1945 - January 27, 2026

NORMAL - Dr. David Nicholas Bussan, DVM, age 80, of Normal, Illinois, died on Tuesday, January 27, 2026. David was born on May 2, 1945, in Galena, Illinois. A cherished and beloved veterinarian for over 50 years, David began working at Town & Country Animal Hospital of Normal, Illinois, in 1969, after graduating from the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine. Known for his compassionate care for beloved pets and their owners, all of whom were treated like family, David enjoyed mentoring and working alongside his son, Dr. Matt Bussan, who continues to work at Town & Country, following in his father's footsteps.

David was preceded in death by his wife, Diane (Wolf) Bussan, their infant daughter, Melissa, his parents, Nicholas and Anne (Mihm) Bussan, of Galena, and his brother, James Bussan, also of Galena. He is survived by his sister, Nancy (Bussan) Schamper, of Scales Mound; his children, Michelle (Wayne) Wagner of Boston, MA, Nick (Nikki) of Heyworth, and here in Normal: Dr. Matt (Leila), John, and Mark. Affectionately known as "Grampy," David leaves behind seven beloved granddaughters: Megan and Mikayla Wagner, Madison Fisher, Brooke Bussan, and Trinity, Felicity, and Grace Bussan.

In addition to taking pride in his family and in his dedication to veterinary medicine, David, who was born and raised on a farm, had a life-long passion and deeply held respect for farming, which he shared with his children and grandchildren. David enjoyed supporting local 4-H (the Linden Lead'em 4-H Club), and taking family road trips, as his children were growing up. Known as an active, dedicated parishioner of both Epiphany and Historic St. Patrick, David was a devoted attendee of Epiphany's daily mass and Adoration, which he often attended with John and Mark.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, January 31, 2026, at Epiphany Catholic Church, from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial, at 10 a.m. with Fr. David Richardson officiating. Internment will take place at Calvary Cemetery, in Pana, Illinois. Kibler-Brady-Ruestman Memorial Home in Bloomington is assisting the family with arrangements. Memorials may be made to Epiphany School's Music Program, or to the Mass General Brigham Cancer Institute, at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Matt, I am so very sorry for the loss of your precious daddy. Not only was he the best veterinarian i ever trusted my dogs with, weather it was just holding me while i cried when we lost one. He truly cared about me and my fur babies, and was one of the sweetest, caring, and loving man i have ever known. The world was a better place because god blessed us with Dave Bussan. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers

What a wonderful vet and more importantly man! My family cherished every visit with him at Town & Country. His gentle spirit, common sense, empathy were trademarks of our visits with him. The animals might not have wanted to visit him, but his human patients were eager to see him to visit.
Dr. Bussan will be sorely missed by all that knew him.
All the animals that have left this earth are waiting for you in heaven. They will be thrilled to see you again! Please say "Hi!" to Bitty, Barney, and Addie.
