David Elmo Byrd, age 95, went home to be with our Lord Jesus Christ on Monday, December 29, 2025. Born August 13, 1930, in Johnston County, he was a son of the late Hubert and Wennonah Byrd. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Earl Byrd, Billy Ray Byrd, and Larry Byrd; sisters, Erdine Dale, Mary Elizabeth Carroll, and Betty Jean Mizio.

David is survived by his wife, Shirley Hicks Byrd; son, David Gerald Byrd of Augusta, Georgia; daughter, Paula Lassiter (Lin) of Four Oaks; grandson Christopher Byrd of Clayton; great-granddaughter, Malia Byrd; brother, Rayford Byrd (Geraldine); sister, Almetrice Smith (Percy); and lots of loving nieces and nephews.

David was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He served his country in the United States Army, earning the rank of Staff Sergeant in the Korean War. He received a Bronze Star, Purple Heart, and Korean Service medal during his service. He retired from IBM after 24 years.

The family extends a heartfelt thank you to Gentiva for taking great care of David while he was at home.

A visitation will be held on Sunday, January 4, 2026, at Hopewell Original Free Will Baptist Church from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The church is located at 5835 Black Creek Road, Smithfield, NC.
