David Carruthers Obituary
David Firestone Carruthers, born on September 21, 1930 passed away on August 8, 2024. Dave loved to quote Mickey Mantle who once said, "if I knew I was going to live this long, I would have taken better care of myself".
A lifelong resident of Columbus, he maintained decades long friendships forged in his early years at the Columbus Academy. He was a virtual encyclopedia of who's who in Columbus, who was related to who and where they grew up and where they currently lived. His gregarious personality was perfectly suited to his career as a real estate agent and he enjoyed the flexibility of being able to play cards at the University Club every afternoon, drop in to visit his many friends and to support his children in their various sporting activities.
Dave was sometimes brash and outspoken, but always steadfast, loyal and true. He was an avid golfer, a no-nonsense Bridge player, an accomplished cruciverbalist (in ink) and completely at ease in any situation.
Dave also loved to say that he thoroughly enjoyed every single phase of his life: his "idyllic" childhood, too much fun at Princeton and his transfer to Ohio State, his time in the Navy, his marriage to the girl who he told he would marry on their first date, raising a young family in Bexley and eventually being able to spend more time playing golf and enjoying his home in Naples. Eleven years ago, in a letter he wrote to his future great-granddaughter, he expressed his hope that she enjoy her life as much as he had - every facet of it. He urged her to live by the Golden Rule, fully and to the utmost, with both zest and vigor. He had tried to live his life this way and felt that he had succeeded for the most part.
Dave recently admitted that the current phase of life really wasn't much fun. Those he left behind are consoled by the knowledge that this final phase was relatively short, and did little to diminish the essence of Dave.
Predeceased by wife Bonnie (Sheaf) and son David Firestone Carruthers Jr., Dave is survived by daughter Connie McIntyre, daughter-in-law Barbara Enyeart Carruthers, son Mike (Linda) Carruthers; grandchildren Alison, Molly, Elizabeth, Katherine, Colby, Erin and Kyle; and nine great-grandchildren.
Dave's family plans to privately celebrate his life at a later date.

I never met Mr. Carruthers, but I imagine from his obituary and from his Columbus Academy education that he was a remarkable man. Thank you for making me aware of the word cruciverbalist. I like it.
