David Cheney Obituary

Published by Legacy from Dec. 15 to Dec. 17, 2025.
David Schilling Cheney, of Bonita Springs, FL and Glen Arbor, MI, passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 11, 2025, at the age of 74, surrounded by his loving family.

Dave was born on June 1, 1951, in Hinsdale, IL, to James and Nancy Cheney. He was a devoted husband to Judy for nearly 40 years; a loving father to Nancy, Ted, and Allison; and a proud grandfather to Lenny, Clay, Sam, and Keegan.

The youngest of three boys, Dave's childhood was marked by frequent moves, but Glen Lake, Michigan was his constant. His family began spending summers there in 1927, and he returned every year, always considering it home. The place remained central to his heart throughout his life. Dave attended Indiana University and later built his life in Chicago and Glen Ellyn, IL, where he met his wife, Judy, introduced by a mutual friend from Glen Lake.

Dave was a successful business owner and CEO of a manufacturing company that supplied process equipment for biopharmaceutical companies. Yet his greatest joy was his family. He was a loving husband and father – playing endless games of catch, coaching youth sports, offering steady guidance, and showing up for every moment that mattered.

After retiring in 2017, Dave built his dream home on Glen Lake, meant to serve as a gathering place for future generations. He served as President of the Glen Lake Association and embraced his many passions: golf, sailing, cars, music, reading, and cheering on his beloved Cubs and Tigers.

Dave was preceded in death by his parents, James and Nancy Cheney; and his brother, Christopher Cheney.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Judith Getman Cheney; his children, Nancy Cheney Landon (Paul) of Atlanta, GA, Theodore Getman Cheney (Jamee) of Chicago, IL, and Allison Schilling Cheney (Cameron) of Tampa, FL; and his four grandchildren, Harrison "Clay" Landon, Leonard Cheney, Samuel Cheney, and Keegan Rousseau. He is also survived by his brother, James Cheney Jr. of Bonita Springs, FL, along with many extended family members and dear friends who will miss him profoundly. Though his family is devastated by his loss, they take comfort in knowing that his legacy will live on in the memories and countless lives he touched.

Celebrations of Dave's life will be held in Bonita Springs, FL, on March 6, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Shadow Wood Country Club, and in Glen Arbor, MI, on July 12 at the Glen Lake Yacht Club.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Dave's name to the Glen Lake Association.

Dear Judy:

Both my family's and my prayers and condolences are with you, and Ted, Allison, and Nancy, and your grandkids at this time.

Having lost Doug and Carl, I know to an extent what both you and your very special family are facing and going through at this time as well.

Please do give Bill and Sylvia, and Margo and Greg, both my family's and my love and warmest regards when you next touch base with them as well.

Also and most of all, you most definitely 'Hit the nail on the head' about us Getman cousins staying and keeping in touch with each other, especially and most of all, with our parents now 'Resting peacefully' as they are doing so most of all as well.

Love,
Bill
