David Lowell Christopherson, 76, passed away peacefully on March 11, 2026.
Dave was born on December 15, 1949, in Vermillion, South Dakota, to Lowell and Maxine Christopherson. He graduated from Vermillion High School and later attended General Beadle State College (now Dakota State University), where he studied history with a minor in physical education—though friends often joked his unofficial “beer minor” was Grain Belt.
While in Madison, Dave met the love of his life, Marylou Krantz, a beautician. The two met at a party, and their connection quickly grew into a lifelong partnership. Dave and Marylou were married on April 13, 1972, and later renewed their wedding vows on March 26, 2022, celebrating over 50 years of marriage.
Together they raised four children: Chad, Wade, Jay, and Becky. Dave took great pride in his family and especially loved watching his children compete in athletics at Vermillion High School. In later years, nothing brought him more joy than attending his grandchildren’s many activities and cheering them on from the sidelines.
Dave worked for more than 20 years at Terminal Grain Elevator before later working for the City of Vermillion at the recycling center. He was well known among friends and family by the nicknames “Guppy” and “Blondie” and was remembered for his easygoing nature and sense of humor.
An avid outdoorsman, Dave loved fishing and hunting and passed that passion on to his children. Time spent outdoors—whether in a boat, deer hunting, or simply enjoying nature—was time well spent in his eyes.
Dave was preceded in death by his father, Lowell Christopherson, a World War II veteran, survivor of the Battle of the Bulge, and former prisoner of war; his mother, Maxine; and his sister, Patricia.
He is survived by his loving wife, Marylou; his children Chad (Shannon), Wade (Stephanie), Jay (Jama), and Becky (Pat); his grandchildren Shelby and Cole Christopherson; Hunter, Hannah, and Hayden Christopherson; Reganne Christopherson; and Tad and Anna Christopherson; as well as one great-grandchild, Heath.
Dave will be remembered for his love of family, his appreciation for the outdoors, and the pride he took in the accomplishments of those he loved most. His legacy lives on through the many memories shared by family and friends.
