David Coardes Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Metropolitan Funeral Service - Berkley Chapel on Jan. 10, 2026.
David Coardes, III, affectionately known to his family as Rocky, was born on April 10, 1952, in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, to the late Hattie Elizabeth Shannonhouse Coardes and David Coardes, Jr.

A man of quiet strength and unwavering resilience, David fought the good fight against interstitial lung disease and pulmonary hypertension and peacefully departed this life on January 6, 2026.

David lived a life marked by service, loyalty, and adventure. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy, where he formed a lifelong bond with his best friend, Charles Brown, who preceded him in death. He continued his love of the sea as a merchant seaman, traveling the world and collecting stories, experiences, and friendships along the way.

A man of sharp wit and thoughtful reflection, David was an avid chess player and crossword puzzle enthusiast, always enjoying a good mental challenge. He found his greatest joy in time spent with family and friends. He was happiest fishing, dancing, watching football, cheering on the UConn women's basketball team, and simply being present with those he loved. His devotion to family was steadfast, and his love was felt deeply by generations.

He was preceded in death by his charming wife, Chyrise Coardes; his brothers, Marvin and Melvin Coardes, Willie and Charlie Banks; his stepmother, Barbara Coardes; and his devoted aunt, Bessie Lykes.

Left to cherish his memory are his children, David Coardes, IV, Caressa Coardes-Henderson (Darryl), and Stephen Coardes. He also leaves behind his grandchildren, Cameron X. Coardes (Abigail), David Alexander Coardes, and Analiyah Coardes; and his great-grandchildren, Creed X. Coardes and Aria Coardes. He is survived by his sisters, Comeleta Coardes (Mike), Maria Coardes, and Rowena Coardes Allen (Napolean); his brother, Antonio Wayne Coardes, Sr. (Jill); a host of cousins, nieces, and nephews; and his special friend, Shirleen Thomas.

David will be remembered for his service, his humor, his often hilarious and unsolicited wisdom, and the love he poured into his family. His legacy will continue in the lives he touched and the generations that carry his name forward.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of David to the American Lung Association or to The MCV Foundation.
