Just last week, I was speaking to a group of first-year medical students in an auditorium, in a room that Dave and I collaborated on presentations in previously, and remembered so fondly his engagement with the students. Dave was always so earnest and focused on equity. In a building that espouses the importance of values, but struggles to teach value formation, Dave spoke with a moral clarity. He emphasized who was without a voice and absent in all of his discussion about how we care for others. A year out from his passing (and a year and a half away from teaching with him) I still think about the force of his convictions fondly. I miss Dave.

Dear Diane,

I am so deeply sorry for the loss of your caring and wonderful David. Oy, what a loss indeed! He was so refreshing as a medical professor and I've heard stories from his students how talented and caring he was. He was such a great person and I'm so terribly sorry for you and your family. I will be making a donation in David's memory to Madison Street Medicine. I have been keeping you in the my thoughts and I will for the time to come.

Dear Diane and Family,
I am so very sorry to hear of David's passing. I learned so much from him during the years we were together at WVU. He was a kind, thoughtful, caring physician who could always be counted on to do the right thing. He was a wonderful teacher and mentor - an individual you would point out to medical students and say, "Dr. Deci is the physician your should strive to be."
A man of faith, who loved his family and his community, David will be missed by everyone who had a chance to know him. I will keep him, and all of you, in my prayers.

Diane I was so sorry to hear about David's passing. I remember the last time I saw you and David at Olbrich Gardens at a members only event. You were greeting people at the door and David was checking for tickets to the show. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.
