David DeWall Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Harwood Cremation and Funeral Services - Canon City on Apr. 13, 2024.
David Allen DeWall was born November 11, 1945 in Canon City, Colorado
to Esther Ruth (Voss) and Raymond Willard DeWall, the second of four
siblings. On April 12, 2024 at 11:11 pm he listened to God's calling him
home. He passed peacefully at home surrounded by his family.
He left behind his wife of 58 years, Becky (Hinkle) DeWall and three
children, whom were the light and purpose of his life; Michael David
DeWall (Debra) of Fort Collins, CO, Robert Edward DeWall (Jona) of
Berthoud, Co. and Lynette S. Harris (Steve) of Penrose, CO. His
grandchildren were his pride and joy. He watched two of them draw their
first breath and attended every event that they were a part of throughout each
of their lives; Kyle B. DeWall, now deceased, Layne Kayce Schieve of
Pueblo West, Benjamin F. Harris (Michaela) of Canon City, Co and Annika
Rae DeWall of Kansas City, Missouri. David delighted in his three great
grandchildren; Sloan Reese and Chandler Edward Schieve, and Saylor
Quinn Harris.
David served in the US Navy during the Viet Nam conflict, as a radioman, at
times stationed in Taipei Taiwan. He enjoyed many adventures, and was
honored to deliver the tragic news of President Kennedy's assassination to
the officers aboard ship.
After the Navy, he returned to Westcliffe, where he met and soon married
Becky beginning their life and growing up together.
David worked hard and many different jobs until he found his passion of
driving eighteen wheelers for Don Ward and later Over the Road. After
retirement from trucking, he joined Becky in her Real Estate Brokerage
selling Real Estate until his health forced him to stay home.
The lasting friendships formed during his years of service with the Canon
City Jaycees remained important. Later after moving to Florence, David
was asked to join the Florence Volunteer Fire Department, becoming a
trained first responder. He loved the camaraderie and service, including
being on the traveling Hose Racing Team. He earned the nickname of
"Crash" for certain obvious reasons. While fighting a fire, he had a heart
attack which forced him into regretted retirement from the fore after only a
few years of service.
He was active in many sports which he was always good at including
softball, bowling, and golf. Also known to have a few brews while beating
his buddies at pool! He was so good at coaching Little League baseball that
upon returning to Fremont County from Southern California; finding no
"Little League", he and Becky called Williamsport Pennsylvania, home of
Little League and found out how to start a chapter in Canon City. The very
first year of organization in 1970, there were thirteen teams of eager little
boys and One little girl, his Daughter Lynette (Princess Knock-a – Homa!).
Later he coached Young Amerian Football until finding his children grown
and no longer in need of a sporting coach, he devoted his time to being on
the board of Home Building Education in Florence for several years. All the
while attending what ever sporting event any of his children were in. He
faithfully traveled to Kansas catching every possible game at Bethany
College where his son played football. And later to all the games watching
his two sons coach high school football including a championship year.
Soccer games, football games, softball games and dancing performances
filled many nights and weekends evolving into enjoying seeing Grandson,
Ben dirt bike races.
His life was full of family and work. Accomplished at almost anything he
tried, including rehabbing homes for resale and reconstructing every home
Becky moved him into.
Reflecting on a good man and a good life is not easy to capture. So many
wonderful events so much joy and tears. A life well lived. He will be so
greatly missed. But so glad he no longer has to struggle.
Services will be held on Sunday April 21, 2024, 12 P.M. at the Steeple Event Center
Chapel in Canon City. Arrangements by Harwood Funeral Services. Please
join us after the services for a gathering at the Harris' home.
