David Dougherty Obituary

David L. Dougherty, a beloved member of the Greenwood, South Carolina community, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his children, on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, at the age of 76.

David was born on February 19, 1949, in Columbia, South Carolina. He graduated from Charleston Southern University in 1969. While living in Charleston, he met his future wife, Cynthia Ann Mabry, and they were married on June 8, 1969, beginning 55 years of marriage rooted in love, faith, and devotion to family.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Cynthia Mabry Dougherty, and by his daughter, Emily King.

David is survived by his children: Shayne (Matt) Sorrow of Greenwood, SC; Ashley (Scott) Musson of Chapel Hill, NC; and Adam (Haley) Dougherty of Columbia, SC; as well as seven grandchildren whom he adored: Anna Claire, David, Jack, Kai, Grace, Elizabeth, and Cate.

David and Cynthia were devoted members of The Episcopal Church of the Resurrection in Greenwood for more than 40 years. Their faith community was central to their lives, and David served the parish in numerous leadership roles, including Vestry member, Senior Warden, Trustee with the Resurrection Foundation, and member of the Finance Committee.

Professionally, David dedicated his life to helping others succeed. After a 47-year career in banking, he served the Greenwood Chamber of Commerce for 10 years as Vice President of Community Relations and later as Interim President and CEO from 2020 to 2021. Beginning in 2023, David worked with the South Carolina Small Business Development Center, supporting small businesses and underserved entrepreneurs, including minority and women-owned businesses.

David's spirit of service extended well beyond his career. In 2024, he supported The Greenwood Promise, reflecting his belief in expanding opportunity for Greenwood students and families. He also served as a volunteer leader with Peach State Federal Credit Union, including as an Advisory Board member. David was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, coworker, mentor, & friend. He was known for his calm wisdom, steady reliability, and the quiet, faithful ways he showed up for others - especially for his family, whom he loved wholeheartedly.

Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 21, 2026, at The Episcopal Church of the Resurrection, 700 Main Street South, Greenwood. The Reverend Nicholas Beasley will officiate. Interment will follow in the churchyard.

The family will receive friends prior to the service from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. in Emmaus Hall at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Church of the Resurrection Foundation, Hospice & Palliative Care of the Piedmont, or to a charity of one's choice.
