David Dougherty Obituary

David Lee Dougherty, 80, a resident of Edinburg for 11 years, passed away Friday, February 13, 2026, at his home. A celebration of life will be held at a later date in the spring at the VFW

Mr. Dougherty was born February 8, 1946, in Youngstown, Ohio, son of the late Richard and Mildred Ockerman Dougherty. He joined the Navy at the age of 17 in 1963 and served in Army Reserves and National Guard Reserves. He was stationed on the USS Whetstone and the USS Weiss during the Vietnam War. After, he joined the Merchant Marines as a member. He worked for 17 years for VDOT as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic. He was head of VFW Riders Group and member of VVA where he put flags on Memorial and Veteran's Day and wreaths at Christmas on Veterans graves in Cedarwood Cemetery in Edinburg. The Hathaway's so graciously helped to place the flags and wreaths.

David is survived by his wife of 59 years, Dianna Dougherty; two daughters, Patricia Marie Yohman and husband, Mark of Columbus, OH., and Kimberly Kaye Kelly of Columbia, MD; sister, Dixie Lou Pellin of Ohio; brother, Richard Dougherty of Florida; seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Margie Faye Waller.

Dave was a friend to all. He never met a stranger. Making connections with people was such a gift of his.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Blue Ridge Hospice, 333 W. Cork St, #405 Winchester, Virginia 22601 or any SPCA. Online condolences may be left at valleyfs.com
