The Announcement

Dr. David L. Eck, age 84, of Rohnert Park, California, passed away peacefully on April 9,

2026, surrounded by the love of his family.

A Legacy of Education and Leadership

Born in Minnesota and raised in Montana, David's life was defined by a relentless pursuit of

knowledge and a deep commitment to his community. After earning his PhD in Chemistry,

he dedicated over 35 years to Sonoma State University as a Professor of Chemistry.

Known for his "tough but creative" teaching style, David challenged his students to think

critically while fostering a sense of community. As the longtime chair of the Chemistry

Club, he created a vibrant space for students to bond over shared interests and discover

the joy of scientific inquiry.

David's influence extended far beyond the classroom. A visionary leader in local

government, he served on the Rohnert Park City Council and as Mayor, where he was a

fierce advocate for controlled growth and environmental preservation. Long before "green"

initiatives were mainstream, David was working on environmental issues across the

country. He was particularly proud of his pioneering recycled wastewater project, an

initiative that continues to serve the city's green spaces today.

The "Mayor" of Every Community

David's civic spirit was an inherent part of his personality. During the time he lived in

Alameda, California, he served on the HOA Board, managed the Landscaping Committee

and made sure everyone knew it was trash day. His presence was so evident that his

neighbors a ectionately dubbed him the"Mayor of Crown Harbor." Whether in a formal

political role or simply as a neighbor, David was always looking for ways to improve the

world around him.

Family & Future

David's greatest pride was his family. He is survived by his children, Lisa Coulter and

Lance Eck, and his four grandchildren. His devotion to his grandkids was the driving force

of his later years; he was committed to paving a path for their success and ensuring they

inherited a world better than he found it.

A Call to Action

In keeping with David's lifelong commitment to the planet and his preference for practical

impact, the family will not be holding a traditional celebration of life. Instead, they ask that

you honor his memory through a Call to Action.

Please consider making a donation to an environmental charity of your choice. The Sierra

Club was one of David's personal favorites and reflects the values he championed

throughout his life. By protecting the earth today, we continue the work David started for

the generations to come.
