In Loving Memory of David W. Erdner
"But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint." -Isaiah 40:31 NIV
Affectionately known to all as "Pap," David William Erdner, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, after a courageous battle with cancer and dementia. Born in
Pittsburgh, PA, on June 12, 1941, Dave lived a life of service, love and unwavering faith. On August 28, 1964, eight months after meeting on a blind date, Dave married the love of his life, Joyce Ann Neuscheler. Together they built a life rooted in family, compassion, and community, proudly raising two sons, Kenneth Albert and David James. He later became "Pap" to Zackary Adam, Nathan Kenneth and Sarah Elizabeth.
Pap shared an unbreakable bond with his grandsons. He admired Zack's strength and marveled at his ability to play the piano. He had joy attending church to hear Zack play worship. With Nate, he was especially proud of his hard work-ethic and his service as a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army, a rank above Pap's own as Sergeant. While Pap was occasionally frustrated by Nate's habit of taking things apart to figure them out, he deeply admired his ability to fix almost anything. Pap shared a uniquely tender connection with his granddaughter, Sarah, helping raise her and serving as a second father figure throughout her life. These relationships brought him great joy and pride, and he cherished the unique connection he had with each of them.
Growing up in Avalon, Dave was a passionate football player and a devoted Steelers fan. He proudly served in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged in 1966. He served on the Avalon Police Force and worked for Davey and Asplundh Tree Companies. Dave was known for his tireless work ethic and generous spirit; whether building, fixing or lending a hand, he was always busy helping others. His commitment to service extended beyond his neighborhood. He and Joyce devoted themselves to the DoorWay Ministry, offering support and spiritual guidance to anyone in need. A devoted Christian, Dave ministered to anyone who needed comfort, hope, or prayer. His legacy is one of kindness, strength, and unwavering belief in the power of love and faith.
Dave is survived by his wife, Joyce: his sons, Kenneth (Kim) and their daughter, Sarah, David (Sandy) and their sons, Zack and Nate (Meg); his nieces, nephews and countless others whose lives he touched. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Oliver George Erdner (1906-1985) and Clara A. Mascko (1912-1977); four siblings, Jean Shirley Muchow (1931-1972), Roseanne Rose (1933-2017), Joseph Oliver II (1935-2018), William R. (1943-2010); and one grand-baby.
In lieu of a formal funeral, there will be a Celebration of Life Service held on Saturday, September 6, 2025, at 11 a.m., at the Church of the Heights, 500 Salem Lane, Gibsonia, PA 15044. Following the service, there will be lunch (casual attire). David was an avid Steeler fan, so feel free to pull out your Steeler gear and come help us celebrate.
"His master said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.'" -Matthew 25:21 ESV
