David Freedman Obituary

Freedman, David Bruce

December 1, 1956 - September 3, 2021

David Bruce Freedman died Friday, September 3, 2021, at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Hospital due to complications from the Covid-19 virus. He was 64 years old. David was born December 1, 1956, to the late Roz and Abe Freedman. He grew up in Asheville, and his love of the mountains continued throughout his life. David graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1979 and from its law school in 1982. After receiving his law degree, he moved to Winston-Salem. During his nearly 40-year career as an attorney, David represented the powerful and the powerless in courtrooms across North Carolina and beyond. He won cases, praise and respect for his fierce loyalty to his clients, his skill as a litigator, his ethical conduct and professional integrity, and his talent for negotiating resolutions that provided fairness and justice. David was most recently a partner in the law firm of Freedman, Thompson, Witt, Ceberio & Byrd. He was named the state's best criminal defense attorney in 2006 by Business North Carolina magazine, was listed for 15 straight years by Best Lawyers in America, and had recently been selected by his peers to join the American College of Trial Lawyers. As with other parts of his life, David gave back to the legal community. He was a past president of the Forsyth County Bar Association, lectured frequently before law groups on legal ethics, and had taught criminal procedure and trial practice as an adjunct professor at Wake Forest University School of Law. He was a past recipient of the Harvey Lupton award from the Forsyth County Criminal Defense Trial Lawyers Association. David was an active member and past president of Temple Emanuel in Winston-Salem. David believed deeply in the Jewish principle of "tikkun olam," our need to heal the world, and he gave his time and talents freely to make Winston-Salem and our state a better place to live. David loved movies, music, riding his bike, and watching sports (particularly UNC and the Panthers). But most of all, he loved his family. He was devoted to Libby, his gentle rock and anchor, the string that allowed his kite to soar. His children were his pride and joy. David's love for Jack, Gary, Ariel, and Chai knew no bounds. It can honestly be said that each child was his favorite. No visit with David was complete without him telling you of their accomplishments and their potential. He was happiest when all his children were under one roof, and the house filled with their Freedman laughter and enthusiasm. Along with his wife and children, David is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Michael and Carolyn Freedman, of Baltimore, Maryland, and his sister and brother-in-law, Janet and Pablo Freedman-Cope, of Asheville. He also leaves behind an enormous circle of friends and colleagues whose lives he enriched. David was the person you wanted with you on your best days and needed beside you on your worst. Simply put, he made things better. We remember his warmth and optimism, his sense of humor and hearty laugh, his wisdom and intelligence, and his ability to help each of us be our best self. May his memory be a blessing. David's family wishes to thank the doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals in the ICU at Baptist Hospital for their care and compassion during the past two weeks. Donations in David's memory may be made to the Shalom Project of Winston-Salem (639 S. Green St., Winston-Salem, NC 27101) or to a charity of the donor's choosing. There will be a private family service at Temple Emanuel on Sunday, September 5, 2021, at 7 p.m. A Livestream link will be available at the temple's website for anyone to join and observe the service. My deepest condolences to Mr. Freeman´s family. He was an amazing person. He inspired me to further my education and I hope to one day fulfill my dream of becoming an attorney. Although he will not be able to physically mentor me his spirit does live on in the many lives he touched. He made me want to be better. I never knew such a honest and compassionate attorney who really cared about the people.

I am also 64 years old, and David and I "came to the Bar [as attorneys]" at about the same time, and I know him from around that time, 1983 or so -- first, playing basketball with him when we were young lawyers. His great sense of humor back then was manifest by his commenting how his new real-life practice of law was less scary than law school, "because the judge could not give me a `D.´"

Although most of my legal career has been in Raleigh, I have had many cases in Winston-Salem, and every time I saw David in Winston he would volunteer (without my asking) to let me use his law office if I ever needed those facilities. What a gentleman and friend! He also helped me out by lending his impressive presence as a speaker at a CLE program I organized.

It is a great loss to have had David leave us so early. I extend my condolences to the family.

My condolences to David's family. I was saddened to hear of David's death just yesterday.
I first met David around 1994 as a law enforcement officer working in Winston-Salem. David represented a few people who were defendants in my investigations in federal court and despite being on the, "other side", I appreciated that David always acted in a professional and fair manner. David embraced the idea that all people are presumed innocent until proven guilty and aggressively advocated for his clients. His preparation made me better at my job. I always admired his preparation and enjoyed watching someone who was one of the best at his craft. In the decades that followed I had contact with David regarding work matters and it was always good to catch up. I last saw him a few years ago in Raleigh at a retirement luncheon and it was nice discussing the, "good ole days." To the family please take comfort in knowing that David was well-respected and admired by people throughout the criminal justice system. My thoughts are with you.

I am saddened to hear of David's passing. I interned at White and Crumpler in 1994. David took me to Federal Court and got me sworn in as an attorney. He was a mentor, a role model and a friend. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family

This is very hard news to hear. David was my trial ad professor at Wake in the early 1990's, and he has been a friend and colleague since. Although we didn't see or speak to each other as often as I'd like over the past few years, I knew whenever he and I would talk that I could count on a question about our Tar Heels. David was a good and decent man, and needless to say, one of the most skilled and respected members of our bar. He will be sorely missed.

I was fortunate enough to work as a legal assistant in the law office with David for about 10 years from the time he was hired after his graduation from law school. David had an infectious laugh but his empathy for the situations of his clients was unmistakable. He was also a wonderful husband and an engaging father. He was definitely a bright light in the legal community and he will be sorely missed. My thoughts and prayers go out to his wife and children and also to the members of his law firm.

Words alone cannot begin to adequately express the depth of my sadness over the loss of such a wonderful gentleman. David´s calmness, his incredible insight, his amazing sense of humor and his compassion for others was second to none. He left me with so many great memories that I will cherish for the rest of my life. Rest peacefully my friend. I will love and miss you every day.

When I think back on our three years together in law school, a time that you go into with a lot of apprehension, I think a great deal of David as someone that actually made it a fun time with the ability to bring humor to the task we started with such intensity in the fall of 1979. We laughed so much, particularly at ourselves. Mr. F has a lot to do with my memory of that time being much more about Franklin Street watering holes and Michael making the shot against Georgetown than the totally miserable mystery of Civil Procedure.
All of us probably went into law school with visions of Atticus Finch, but David actually got there over the following 39 years. I know that he will be up there to argue the difficult case for my entry when the time comes, but I will certainly miss him until the case gets called. All of our thoughts and prayers are with you.

David will be greatly missed. I had the honor of watching him work his magic in the courtroom when he represented my boyfriend in Davie County. He was a legal genius and so very humble. I pray for comfort to his family!

I´m so sorry to hear of Mr Freedman´s passing. I will never forget when I worked for Dr Schwartz and I went to the magistrates small claims court; I walked in with David Friedman against the defendant! It was almost comical to the magistrate that David Freedman would be in small claims court! He was so kind and gentle with me but he had such a presence in court. It was like everyone knew who he was but he was very humble. I remember the way he had me wait with him while the defendant left so I was not in the elevator at the same time with the defendant. He was really a great man. My heart goes out to all the Freedman family.

Had know David for 20 plus years at the W-S Central YMCA. We always took time to speak for a few minutes. We had several mutual friends away from the Winston-Salem area that we often discussed. Great Guy! Prayers for the family; David always provided me updates on this kids happenings / activities and would ask about my daughter as well. RIP David! Beyond shocked to learn of his passing - COVID sucks; but; it's for real.

To the Family of Attorney Freedman: I am so sorry for your loss! The world just lost a passionate advocate for justice. Attorney Freedman was the best advocate a black woman tangled in the legal system could ask God for....And he never treated me any different after my cases were heard.

The family will be in my prayers for a speedy recovery from this shock.

Keep the faith,

I knew David from law school at Carolina. He took great joy from life. Outside of court, he always had a smile on his face. It is a tragedy that such a productive, vibrant life has been cut short.
