David Wayne Guin age 64, a.k.a. El Diablo, a local surfing legend, passed away September 22nd, 2025. He was born to Bob and Eileen Guin on January 9th, 1961 in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Anyone who knew him has a story to tell you. David loved anything on the water, especially surfing and fishing. He also had a passion for taking in a stray cat or dog.
David got his nickname, El Diablo, from the local surfers that knew him. He was known as one of the enforcers on the local waters near Okaloosa Island fishing pier. There are different levels of experience in surfing with beginners labeled as kooks. Kooks typically do not follow the rules of the water. Nobody wants to be called a kook and David was a nightmare for them. He would keep kooks in line if they were surfing nearby. Though he rarely surfed in competitive tournaments, his surfing knowledge and experience helped others he knew.
He loved fishing and was somewhat of an expert in the local bayous. When he was still in high school, he would get up at 3am to go fishing and still catch the bus to school…and sometimes he didn't.
His home for over 40 years was on Okaloosa Island, filled with memories of his surfing and fishing life. His forever roommate Fin, a local stray cat he adopted, would be there too by his side. Open the refrigerator and there was always bottles of ketchup, along with some beer and fish.
David surfed all over the world, including Spain, Hawaii, and Costa Rica. Now he can surf forever.
David is survived by his son, Cole Guin; his father and mother, Bob and Eileen Guin; his brothers, Bobby and Jeff Guin (Betsy Guin); his sister, Cathy Guin; his sister-in-laws, Annette Guin and Leny Guin; his nephews, John (Taylor Guin), Troy, Luke, and Michael Guin; his nieces, Jessica Kekich (Andrew Kekich) and Ellee Guin. He was preceded in death by his nephew, Bobby Guin.
A Celebration of Life will be Saturday October 4th at Okaloosa Island Pier at 7:30am and a Paddle Out at 8am. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in his honor to a local animal rescue organization.
