David Hartman

 

David James Hartman of Ventura, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, September 30, 2023, at the age of 90 following a three week decline in health.

David was born in Santa Barbara and raised in Oak View, California. He graduated from Ventura High School in 1951, and proudly served in the Navy (Korean War) for the next four years. After his military service David worked 43 years for the Southern California Gas Company, where he enjoyed his job, his co-workers and the many customers he served.

David met his future wife, Shirley Truitt, at church, during high school. They were inseparable for 70 years of marriage. Together their personalities complemented one another, creating a powerful team of love and service.

At the early age of 12, David put his faith in Jesus Christ. He remained true to his faith his entire life, quietly serving as an active church member. He especially enjoyed singing in the choir, playing his trombone and most recently his friendships at VenturaJubilee Fellowship. 

David spent his leisure time gardening, working jigsaw puzzles, and was a life-long tennis player. After retirement David and Shirley enjoyed travelling, keeping in touch with relatives and attending their grandkid’s activities. They have enjoyed the friendships and care they received at Cypress Place Assisted Living for the past four years.

David was a faithful husband and father who supported and was involved in every activity of his family. He was engaged and encouraged each of his kids and grandkids in every way, from buying sports equipment to helping with college tuition. That caring attitude influenced all those around him. Many of his daughter’s friends consider David and Shirley to be their second parents.

David is survived by his wife, Shirley Hartman; children, Karen (Dan) Thompson and Kris (Jeff) Brown; grandchildren, Rachael Thompson, Rebecca (Evan) Oates, Sean Clark, Alison (Marshall) Yanzick, David Newby, and Robin (Rick) Deming; greatgrandchildren, Hallie and Hunter Clark (Sean), Deacon, Isla and Noelle Oates (Rebecca). He was preceded in death by his daughter, Kathy Clark; his sister, Connie Hartman; and his parents, John and Grace Hartman.

Memorial service will be held 11 am on October 7, 2023 at Perez Family Funeral Home, 3150 Loma Vista Road, Ventura, California.
