David Frederick Helfers, age 86 of Wautoma Wisconsin passed away peacefully at home under hospice care with his wife Sandra and family at his side on Thursday, May 2, 2024
He was born September 17, 1937 in Chicago IL to Fred and Olga Helfers (both deceased). David grew up in Addison IL, attended St Paul Lutheran grade school and York High school in Elmhurst.
From an early age he enjoyed working on cars which led him to his career at Eddie Ruch Pontiac in Wheaton IL as an auto mechanic. During which time he took a leave to serve his country in the United States Army from 1960 to 1962. He returned back to Ruch’s and worked many years until Eddie sold the business. David wanted to work a few more years and went to work at St. John Lutheran School & Church in Wheaton IL as the head custodian until his retirement.
David loved his family, especially spending time Up North with them all. He introduced his children to the Great Outdoors – fishing, swimming, water skiing, boating and admiring all God’s beautiful creations. He also loved Pheasant hunting with his son, grandson and bird dog Beau. In his spare time at home his other passions were gardening and wood working.
David is survived by his wife Sandra of 63 years. During which time they spent many years living in Wheaton IL and Elburn IL. After retirement they moved up to Wautoma WI for the past 20 years. Together they have two children: Son - Steve (Sue) Helfers; Daughter – Deborah (Dan) Pearson; Two Grandchildren - Steven Helfers and Amanda Helfers. As well as 2 nieces and a nephew, other relatives and friends. David had one sister – Carol (Denis) Schnell who are both deceased.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, May 11, 2024 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, N4514 24th Avenue, Wild Rose, WI 54984 from 1:00 p.m. until the time of funeral service at 2:00 p.m. with Revs. Robert Selle and William Meier co-officiating. Interment will be at St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery, Addison, IL at a later date. Memorials may be directed to Immanuel Lutheran Church, Mt. Morris WI.
